Trip started in Budapest and included such stops as Vienna and Krems Austria, as well as Passau, Regensberg and finished up in Nuremberg, Germany. It was the wife's idea for our 20th anniversary- I negotiated with her on the dates. Saved about half price by going in November instead of September.
Various websites exist so you can shop price and River companies - the only drawback is that you to "register" on the site to get pricing.

enjoyable, I would have liked to spend maybe one more day in Vienna and maybe one less day in Germany. The vessel is easy to get around, we chose a room with a small balcony so not to feel as confined. The tour excursions and things to do you can stay in your room as much or as little as you prefer.
I would do a variation of the trip in the future (different river) - there are so many options available as extending the trip on the front end or the back end. We met numerous couples that have toured with Viking on numerous occasions that they do a good job.

Do you think seeing the country by river and staying on the boat was well worth say touring by car and staying in hotels? Did it give you more or less time to tour? Was it nice not having to check in and out of a hotel? How were the cities you stopped? Super touristy toward the boats? Or how was that? I know the boats aren't huge, but I'm always curious how the stops are compared to cruise ship stops?

The food on board is supposed to be very good, how was it? I'd assume it was local food right?

It’s was more relaxing by staying on ship, not dealing with luggage everyday and driving etc. it does remove your freedom and can limit your sightseeing. Most of the cities were interesting- I’d like to see more of Vienna.
Food was excellent and local

Its gotta be nice to travel when you sleep. Great way to knock out two birds with one stone and save tons of time.

We use Homeaway.com, just spent 7 weeks in Vienna, side trips to Budapest, Prague, Melk and Salzburg.
Two years ago 3 Months in Malaga Spain. Fo us this beats ant cruise. Live like the locals, meet people, very relaxing. Cruises are too confining and rushed.
Even though the food is good after a week tastes the same. But to each their own
Friends who have cruised and now rent an apartment and make side trips agree with us

I am a witness....

Honestly, viking-style river cruises are the only kind that interest me

I know Viking tends older, did you have any younger folks on your cruise (20s/30s couples)?

Yes. It’s was a mix. Quite a few in 20-30. 40-55 probably most and 65 or do plus

I like that route too if you are staying in the same place for awhile, 7 weeks is much longer than most. We did a home exchange in Kent England and then rented an Airbnb in London when I was there this past summer.

But I really like the appeal of only checking into one place, your time on vacation is limited and checking into 3-4 hotels, unpacking, traveling to and from, etc. adds up more than most will admit.

I'm extremely anti cruise, never been on one. But a cruise like this in Europe on a small boat where your only real time on the boat is eating breakfast and dinner and sleeping, appeals to me. It would be nice to go to bed and wake up in a different town, and never having to check in or out of a hotel every time.

viking food is great. the chef, at least on my cruise, was at the local market everyday buying dinner provisions. i found vikings food better than regents food.

except when you are going thru a lock on the river without warning. i thought i was having vertigo but it was the lock descent.
