Anyone ever done a river cruise on the rhine or their Mediterranean cruises? Going to try that out next year as we’ve heard it’s a good time:

We've done 8 cruises with Viking: 7 River / 1 Ocean: 8 Total. Doing the Iceland's Majestic Landscapes in late August (starting in Norway and ending up in Iceland). Haven't done an Ocean Cruise on the Mediterranean yet.

We did the Rhine a couple of years ago (Rhine Getaway/Amsterdam to Basel). The Rhine flows through iconic cities like Amsterdam, Cologne, Strasbourg, and Basel, offering travelers access to centuries of history, architecture, and art. The stretch between Koblenz and Bingen (often called the Rhine Gorge) features a storybook landscape of hilltop castles, vineyard-covered slopes, and quaint villages.

Castles, charming villages, and historic cities, all while traveling in comfort without packing and unpacking. It’s a relaxing, enriching way to experience Europe with guided tours, great food, and hassle-free travel built in. No one under 18 is allowed. No casinos. Ship max is 190. Great food and service.

NOTE: The best part of that trip was the week we spent on our own post-cruise in Colmar France. If you can swing it, consider your cruise during late November / early December as many of the European Christmas Markets are open y then and it can be a little cheaper than mid-December.

Rhine Options

PS: We just did the Danube Waltz - November 2024. Started in Budpaest, an amazing city! Don't discount that route! Beautiful trip.

Excellent to hear. Yes, we are doing the Christmas rhine cruise ending in Balen, then plan to take a train to Montreux and spending Christmas there. Then train to Milan and back home. Very excited to check out the little markets and enjoy a quiet voyage down the Rhine. The other trip will be from Barcelona to Rome. Good stuff!

We've done three river cruises and one sea cruise on Viking. All were fantastic. We will be taking the Rhine River cruise from A to B again in two weeks.

Great crew and staff. We've met a lot of interesting people along the way.

My boss did the same thing, he was not a fan of cruises but gave this a shot …. he came back glowing and said it was one of the best experiences of his life

Wife and I did the Rhine one from Amsterdam to Basel.

Good food on the ship that changes locally. Good/clean service. Would do it again in a second.

The majority of the passengers were retirement age. Which is not big deal; but if you want partying on the boat this is not the place.

Yeah. There is a thread on the OT about what is old. I resemble that remark!

Seriously, I would put the average age of Viking cruisers in the mid upper 60s range. There are outliers on either side. But generally, there are people that have lived their lives and are enjoying the fruits of their labor.

I can chime in here because we have taken two Viking river cruises in the last year and a half and have a Mediterranean ocean cruise scheduled for next year.
This past April we took the Grand European cruise that started in Amsterdam, spent two weeks on the Rhine, Main and Danube and ended in Budapest. Then we took the 3 day extension to Prague.
It was fabulous. I am not going to say it was the absolute best vacation I have ever been on because there are many contenders, but I will say that it is the best cruise I have been on and I have taken about 20 of them over the last 40 years.

Last year we took the Bordeaux cruise. It was also a lot of fun. That one was designed for wine aficionados (which we are). We thoroughly explored one of the great wine regions of the world, but if your main focus is the river scenery and the quality of the ports, I would definitely recommend the other one.

Next year we have the Empires of the Mediterranean cruise scheduled which starts in Greece, sails the Aegan and Adriatic and ends in Venice. Looking forward to that one also.

Amazing feedback from all. Sounds like we are going to have a great time with Viking. We are normally Royal Caribbean cruisers but wanted to try something different next year and I think we may be switching to Viking from here on out hah.

We did the Christmas Rhine last December from Basel to Amsterdam. A few days in Interlaken before we set off.

The Points Guy had a nice review on cabins: LINK

AND..

While Viking is popular, there are other options based upon your price points and travel preferences. We might do an Avalon Cruise on the Rhone. Just had a friend do the Rhine on Ama Waterways and loved it.
