We may be visiting our oldest son & family in Fowlerville, MI the 2nd week of July but that place is dead. Any recommends for a 4 or 5 day VRBO/AirB&B-friendly area in Michigan, northern Pennsylvania or western NY?
ETA: Mackinac Island came up in discussion, but that place is booked up

Given the choice, I would 100% stay in Michigan. Summertime can be tricky without advanced planning, but definitely check out places like Traverse City, Grand Haven, New Buffalo, and Saugatuck.

Higgins and Houghton Lake are about a 2 hour drive north and are great inland lakes

Traverse City, Petoskey are is all really nice. Can be pricey and may be booked up.
Don't sleep on Tawas/Oscoda/Harrisville/Alpena on the other side of the State.
Also, northern michigan had really bad flooding this spring research where you are going to make sure that didn't impact your visiting.
