Just got back from a 10 day trip to the above mentioned areas and I must say it’s a cool part of the country . We flew into Boston and rented a van w/ Alamo. (Tried the emerald aisle with national but they didn’t have anything that would fit 4 adults and a 3 y/o).

We wanted to start the trip in Bar Harbor but wanted to break that drive up so we made our way up to Old Orchard Beach (near Portland,ME) to knock off for the first night. Stayed in a pretty modest , but nice place on the beach called the Edgewater Inn. We went the next morning to visit the Portland Head Lighthouse before our drive up to bar harbor. It was definitely the best lighthouse of many that we saw the entire trip.

Bar Harbor - Very cool and beautiful town. We stayed in the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel. It was VERY nice and convenient walking to everything. We did a sunset cruise with Acadian Boat Tours and it was a good time. Saw tons of wildlife and some really cool houses and lighthouses. We also spent some time in Acadia National Park. It was great and my favorite parts of the park were Cadillac Mountain and Sand Beach. Highly recommended. Also, the best lobster roll I had the entire trip came from a little shack about 7-8 miles outta town called the Travelin Lobster.

Middle part of the trip we drove down to mid coast Maine and stayed in a little town called Edgecomb right across the bridge from Wiscasset. In these couple days we visited the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens , Boothbay Harbor and we also visited the town of Camden on our way down to this spot. Camden is probably my favorite town in Maine. Just stunningly beautiful and stood out. Like something you’d see on a postcard but it still had a genuine feel about it and didn’t seem as touristy as Bar Harbor to me.

For the last portion of the trip we made our way down to Cape Cod. We stayed in a nice Airbnb cottage in the town of Yarmouth. I REALLY liked Yarmouth. It didn’t feel as “true cape cod” like the town of Chatham but it had some great beaches and was convenient to a lot of stuff (mainly Hyannis where the ferry’s to MV & Nantucket operate ) . We drove the entire cape and checked out several beaches and ate a lot of good food. If ever in the Yarmouth area I highly recommend Skippers Chowder House. Mrs jkyle and I also broke away one night and went into Boston for game 3 of the nba finals. Was a great game .

Overall it was a fantastic trip. Considering the group we had with a 3 y/o and my mother and grandmother we managed to cover a lot of ground and see a lot. This is truly a beautiful and unique part of the country. I would love to live up there. I could post a lot more but I know TLDR. I see the occasional thread about this type of trip so if anyone has any questions related to the area I’ll be glad to answer them if I can.

Looks awesome. How many days was the the Maine-only part of the trip? And how far out did you book accomodations?

I booked stuff probably 10-12 months out. Not sure if that was necessary but I enjoy looking and really doing some homework before pulling the trigger on anything. The Airbnb/Vrbo listings were endless in these areas. If bar harbor is on your list of places to potentially visit I would recommend the bar harbor inn and spa. It was comparable in price to where we stayed but it had the best location in town.

Stayed in bar harbor 2 nights but we got in town pretty early before check in so I guess 2.5ish days there.

Spent 2 nights in edgecomb (right beside wiscasset) . Not as happening of a place as bar harbor but I was walking distance to reds eats (the famous lobster roll place ). That area was very convenient to boothbay harbor and bath. Boothbay harbor was one of the coolest towns of the entire trip. There’s a little stretch of road just south of there called Ocean point I believe. (We gps’d to ocean point walk) bc of the advice given by the parking lot attendant and it was the most beautiful coast line I’ve ever seen. It was the best scenery from the entire trip hands down. Highly recommend if you’re in that area.

That’s awesome that you got to a finals game. TD Garden sounded wild from the tv.

Definitely a hidden gem. There’s a cool brewery just a couple miles from the harbor.

Great trip review!

Any black flies during the trip? Good lord those things bite. There in Maine certain times of the year. Early May or later in the fall like September/October are good times to visit. Did you get to bike on the carriage trails in Acadia?

Thanks. I don’t recall any black flies. Our time in Acadia was pretty brief. The only places we went was Cadillac Mtn , thunder hole , sand beach , Jordan pond , and the precipice trail. I wish we’d have spent more time in the park . That place was beautiful.

I think it’s still a little early for those black flies, but they’re coming. Hate those damn things.

That lobster roll looks amazing. I've never had one but really want to try both versions (hot w/butter v. cold w/mayo). How much did that bad boy run you?

About 35 bucks. Damn things are expensive. I had prob 3 on the trip as did the wife and I remember thinking “damn we about 200$ deep on these lobster rolls “ They’re good but that’s pretty insane for a sammich. I went into the trip knowing I’d blow a load on lobster rolls though so it’s all good.

Yeah everyone thinks when you go to Maine that lobster is super cheap. Not really the case. Still expensive as hell, just fresher.

Great review, we hit a lot of the same areas last year. I agree with moving there, seems like it would be awesome for 5 or 6 months out of the year.
