fam tripa

My ex was a travel agent for nearly 15 years (pre-Internet) and although she did mostly Corporate travel we scored a ton of those cheap fam trips. Cost next to nothing. She would also book a fictitious passenger in the middle seat so no one ever sat next to me. And I was flying enough to be Continental Elite and I upgraded a ton too, as she was good on those old software systems. The good old days. Her company is no longer in business, but she had good things to say about Pearson’s for leisure travel (though it’s been years)

I spent months researching all the details and did all the planning myself. I've never even considered hiring a travel agent. But to each their own.

I do the same. But this is the key. It takes TONS of time and planning to do it yourself properly. If you can't put in that much time, leave it to a pro. But I love the planning. My dream career is to be a boutique travel agent who plans extremely customized trips. But I don't think I'd make enough money.

I’m not going to say that I enjoy the planning as much as the trip but I do enjoy the planning. Researching vineyards in Piedmonte and Tuscany is something I greatly enjoy.

I'm just wondering what's "tons" of planning looks like to people since I've seen it typed out here a few times.

Normally when planning a trip I go to Instagram and start following some pages that highlight things to do in the area I will be in. Then check out trip advisor/google for things to do, then book some excursions/things to do via trip advisor/Viator.

Using Instagram has helped a ton as you tend to find things not seen on Top 10 to do list from other travel sites.

I know everyone is different but it seems people try to plan out every minute of a vacation which just sounds stressful to me

Agreed. We usually plan our trips out around nine months in advance as that’s when I can get seats with my miles/points.

Once I have the locations fleshed out I have many months to plan where to stay and what to do.

I actually considered it at one point, and then I ended up estimating that I would make $40,000 per year if things went reasonably well. It would've been fun, though.
