Mostly looking for lodging information, i.e., renting a house. I'm usually pretty good with VRBO, but it looks to be all over the map for here.

What's a good area I should look to stay, to try pinpointing places, for anyone who's been?

Also, what's the best place to fly in? Would it make sense to go to Boston for 3-4 days, then drive to Maine?

Flying to Boston is not bad.
Maine is only about 50 minutes from Logan Airport.
Getting up to Acadia is probably another 2/3 hours though.

Spent a week in Boston and did several day trips.
One to Cape Cod.
One to Newport Rhode Island
One to Maine.

You could do a lot in Boston and then head up to Maine. If you didn't want to fly into Boston, your next bet could be Portland Maine which is closer to Acadia National Park area.

Not much help as I went to Acadia 15 to 20 years ago. We flew into Portland and stayed a few nights in Bar Harbor at a hotel in walking distance of the marina/downtown area. Highlight of the area was sea kayaking around the islands outside of Bar Harbor. We took a guided trip from one of the outfitters in BH.

Went to Acadia a couple of years ago and did the cottage rental. You probably want to stay in Bar Harbor as there are plenty of restaurants and shopping. Definitely do the sea kayaking and try the bike rentals. Lots of bike trails and there is a shuttle that will take you and your bikes up to the trails. Try the lobster pounds for cheap lobster. We flew into Boston and spent a couple of days there and drove up to Bar Harbor. Did some white water rafting on the way back to Boston which was really nice. Not sure if they still run rafting after Labor Day. A nice trip.

That's what we did, both are well worth seeing. I'd probably try to get something around Bar Harbor.

We've been there many times.

Boston certainly is an option, but we fly into Bangor and rent a car. Easy (1 hour?) drive.

I would recommend staying in Bar Harbor. Easy to walk to restaurants, bars, etc.
Plenty of B and B's to choose from. Bar Harbor Inn is an old hotel w great location on the point.

Rent bikes and ride the carriage paths. Go to Jordan Pond House and have popovers on the back lawn. Drive up to Cadillac Mountain. Breakfast at Cafe This Way. Lots of other stuff to do as well.

Why don't more people live in this area? I've never been, but it sounds perfect. If I didn't have family in Louisiana this is the kind of place I'd want to live.

I'm guessing the winters are pretty brutal.

Thanks for the response everyone.

The nights are pretty cool during the summer, I can't imagine what a winter would be like.

This is what you want to be doing. We stayed in Southwest Harbor when we went but its all relatively the same if you are renting a vehicle. Very easy to bike around and the Hiking is excellent. You will see a lot of lobster and blueberry related items on the menus. Acadia in the summer is a great place to be.
