Taking family on trip to vegas/grand canyon *updated

Thinking about taking the family to see Vegas and the grand canyon.
Never contemplated a trip like this until reading this board! We typically do Destin and Disney each year.
Looking at flying in to Vegas and renting a minivan. Family of 6(40,40,15,13,10,6)
Looking at 7/29 - 8/3 roughly.. Tuesday through Saturday
Would like to see Vegas a day and then go see some sights.
Is this time way too hot to do a trip like this?
Any suggestions?

After reading some of the heat warnings, this trip may be better planned for a different time of year!
Any other suggestions on what to do with family of 6 for about 5 days end of July less than 4k?
Did chattanooga last year...thought maybe the keys as an option?

It could literally be 120 degrees. So that's up to you. Its a dry heat though...
You are going to want more than 1 day in Vegas fyi. At least most likely. Its fun just to walk around and see the hotels and what not. Maybe go to a show, etc.

Vegas will be miserably hot, even as a dry heat.
Grand Canyon will be a little cooler since it's at a higher elevation, but it'll still be hot. And likely very crowded.

The heat will def effect every outdoor activity that time of year. I love the desert in November December.

It will be in Vegas for sure. Highs over 100 easily every day.
Temps at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon at the top won't be horrible(80s but low humidity). At the bottom of the canyon...over 100 degrees.
Vegas/Grand Canyon trip is better suited for fall or spring.

Don’t forget to go to the Hoover Dam and have a dam tour guide give you a dam tour.

I've actually heard that the real dam tours are pretty interesting

We did this for Spring Break when our kids were 11 & 9. Stayed in Vegas 5 nights, and day-tripped from there.
Took a tour group to the Grand Canyon one day, and that really wasn't that bad. It is like a 4-5 hour drive if I remember correctly, so being in a bus with the reclining seats and movies made it tolerable. The kids got there fill of the Grand Canyon in the 2 hours or so that we were there. Unless you are going hiking down into the canyon, it is hard to travel enough to change your perspective. I'm sure there is a lot more to it, but for my kids, they were over it pretty quickly. We have some great pictures, and it is remembered as a good trip.
Vegas in July is HOT. But the pools are nice. Plan to walk around and sight see in the mornings, and plan some pool time in the afternoons.

Just went a couple of weeks ago. Best dam tour I've ever been on.
