Week after Easter (April 13-18). Wife and I can fly free on United, but looking for an inexpensive vacation to go on.

We’ve been to Costa Rica twice, so possibly somewhere else. We love nature and the outdoors.

Thanks in advance.

Looks beautiful but United doesn’t fly there unfortunately.

Are you only talking direct flights?

* Boca del Toro - (direct flight to Panama on Copa/United and then a small hopper)
* Belize - pretty easy to get to and nice jungle and mountain tours

If you are willing to fly a little bit further, Ecuador is underrated.

COPA does. Part of Star Alliance.

I’d have to check if we can fly on COPA for free.

Yeah, thought about Belize. Stopped there on a cruise years ago. Beautiful place.

United doesn't fly anywhere in Central or South America direct from MSY.

Only options would be COPA to Panama City or Delta (seasonal) to Cancun.

I would suggest Guatemala. Fly into GUA and split your time between Antigua and Lake Atitlan. In Antigua, you can enjoy a perfect colonial town and hike mountains/volcanoes. Atitlan is beautiful, and the Mayan towns surrounding the lake speak different languages and each have their own character.

Five days is also a good time for Panama. Panama City itself and the canal are good for a couple of days, but Sobernia National Park was the best rainforest I've been in -- I saw all kinds of wildlife.

Got back from Panama last night. Rented a car for 7 days and visited Bocas, Boquete, El Valle, and Panama City (along with the canal). Hit up a few national parks, hiked up Volcan Baru overnight for sunrise, toured the islands around Bocas, did some incredible hiking in Anton Valley (India Dormida and Cerro La Gaita).

Panama is incredible. You could easily spend 5 days there and enjoy it.

Boca del Toro, Panama ? I’m trying to think of some spots a little off the beaten path if it is going to be just you and your wife.

They fly all over South and Central America from IAH. Gonna fly from LFT-IAH, then wherever.

It may be the best place in central/south America for wildlife. The canal zone was left undeveloped by the Americans, and the Panamanians have kept it undisturbed as a national park. The zone is 10 miles wide for the length of the canal and the rainforest is close to pristine. I visited Costa Rica 3 times and then gave Panama a try, and have not been back to Costa Rica. Costa Rica is more tourist friendly but I've not seen anything that can touch the rainforest and wildlife in Panama, except for maybe the Amazon basin and Guyana (and both have their drawbacks). The birding on Pipeline Road (in Sobernia) is almost legendary; we picked up something like 130 species of birds on the day we visited there. Lots of sloths and monkeys and even an anteater.

That sounds really cool. Will look into this.

Yeah, the cool thing about Sobernia National Park in Panama is that the most incredible, pristine, virgin rainforest is only 30 minutes from a city of 3 million people.

And the reason for that is that the canal needs water, because each boat going through means that 52 million gallons of water are used. Because the canal is the lifeblood of the Panamanian economy, protecting the rainforest that feeds it is of critical economic importance.

I don't know of anywhere else in the world where such pristine rainforest is so close to such a large metropolis.
