Heading there today for the weekend. Any recs on things to do for a family of 4? I looked at old threads but they were locked. Staying at the king and prince. Left the golf clubs at home this time

Its a pretty laid back beach town. They have a putt putt down near the pier. Golfing, and drinking on the beach are about the only two things to do unless you go deep sea fishing. Crab trap and Mullet Bay are your typical beach food. Not bad. Barbara Jeans is good for lunch, really good crab cakes. Southern Soul BBQ is some of the best bbq in the nation, and constantly ranked in the top 10 by most magazines/newspapers. Brunswick, right outside of st simons is where brunswick stew was created, so get a bowl of that if thats your thing. Georgia Sea Grill is probably the best food on the island, but not cheap. Pier park at night is fun to walk. Can buy a crab trap and let the kids catch some crabs off the pier.

I will second Barbara Jeans crab cakes

Great info!
So far we have dinner reservations at coastal kitchen, halyards, and Nancy. Planning to hit up southern soul and sals for lunch at some point.
I’ve heard you can do shrimp boat tours so considering doing something like that

I have not been to Nancy, but have heard nothing but great things. I havent been down in probably 2 years now, used to go every summer. brogens is a bar if you wanna ditch the family one night
climbing the light tower is pretty neat. They have haunted tours as well, never did it but was always interested. We pretty much just stayed on the beach, and the people I went with had jet skis, so took those out and thats fun, im sure you could rent some down there.

Let us know how the trip turns out. I've been there several times for business purposes and there does not seem to be a lot to do except play golf and hang out on the beach I guess. I never actually saw the beach.
I did eat at Southern Soul once. I got there early, about 4 pm, and the brisket was not ready but they had some burnt ends so I got those and a sausage sandwich. I thought it was really good, although in looking at the picture it does not look like a lot of meat. Nonetheless, I would go back.

I have eaten seafood in a few places there and in Brunswick and it was mostly good but nothing extraordinary that I can recall.

Your family might get a kick out of going to Jekyll Island (next island South) and running around the beach with all the scenic picturesque driftwood you've seen in magazines. There's also a waterslide park on the South side of the island.
On St. Simon's...
Mallery St Cafe is my go-to laid back family friendly breakfast place, either before or after a morning walk on the pier. 408 Mallery St, Saint Simons Island, GA 31522
Mullet Bay is my go-to seafood spot with extra large covered* deck and spacious enough for a baby stroller, casual basic seafood like shrimp baskets and such, very family friendly. 512 Ocean Blvd, Saint Simons Island, GA 31522
The Southern Soul BBQ place already mentioned is legit, but it's a madhouse. Personally I wouldn't want to sit down and eat there, the thing to do is call in your order and take it back to your condo or eat it at the beach or pier or pier park. 2020 Demere Rd, Saint Simons Island, GA 31522
If your family likes surf fishing, the north end 15th St Public access gets you to a deep creek cutting into the ocean. Don't get sucked away! People catch alot of fish off the pier too. The earlier suggestion of crabbing off the pier is another great suggestion.
If your family is adventurous, drive down to St. Mary's and get a ferry to Cumberland Island, if the weather is nice. Depending on your kids' ages. It's not a place you want to take babies or toddlers... it is very primitive scenic historic hike-and-bike kind of place, bring mosquito spray, sunscreen, and more water than you think you'll need. You have to buy ferry tickets through a local restaurant there in St. Mary's... it's weird. But totally worth it.
Cumberland Island National Seashore
Ruins of the old Rockefeller place, "Dungeoness".

Gotta go to Sweet Mama's one morning and get some pork pops.
I spent the majority of my college years in SSI so I have a much different version of the island but I typically spend the majority of my time on sea island and in redfern village (gnats landing, bubbas, catch 228). King and Prince is a great place to stay tho.

On a longer trip, Sapelo Island is a real interesting excursion. Some of the locals have gotten into the tourism business. Look up the Bailey family. Cornelia was the matriarch, she passed away in 2017.
Cumberland island is a great trip as well.

Southern soul bbq was fantastic. Had a sampler with ribs, pulled pork, Brunswick stew, and bbq beans. Modest wait in line. Pretty good canned beer selection but drafts were meh. Highly recommend if you’re in the area.
I was also impressed with Coastal kitchen. Casual vibe. Had a grouper special over grits that was solid albeit slightly bland. We were seated next to the window overlooking the marina
Ice cream at moo cow for dessert (homemade chocolate chili)

Surprised no one has mentioned Palmer’s Village Cafe.
Great oatmeal pancakes and the best Reuben I’ve ever had. Good specials every day.

Just ran across that place on yelp. May go there for breakfast

I really like it. There may be a wait if it’s crowded down there.

Lunch at half shell before doing a kayak tour through the marsh.
Dinner at Nancy. Wow. Probably a top 10 dining experience for me. Highly recommend if you’re ever in the area

We go there once a year for a week.
The water park on Jekyll is decent, as is Driftwood Beach. The ruins on Jekyll are interesting. Fort Oglethorpe and the church and cemetery up the road are neat.
I agree with hiltacular on the places in Redfern Village. There's an olive oil shop that is great there too.
Marshside Grill is Brunswick is good. The best pork chop sandwich that you will ever have is at Willie's Wee-Nee Wagon in Brunswick too.
Maybe I've just had a series of unfortunate events at Southern Soul, but I've never been impressed. I can go to ten places in metro Atlanta that have better BBQ.
