Anyone visited St. John in the past 6 months or so? Wondering what shape it’s in. Looking at a potential trip in late May. A little leery of reading stuff on social media as they could be pumping it up a bit. Was more looking for some reliable first hand knowledge.

I was there three months ago. Had an amazing trip. From what I was told by the locals, it is basically back to full operation. The Westin Resort was the last big thing they were waiting on, and it opened back up the week I was there.

Do it! I certainly would. I posted a trip review about a month ago.

I’d go in a heartbeat. Virgin Islands did a much better job than Puerto Rico at being proactive and getting things done. That being said, I wouldn’t hesitate going back to Puerto Rico either.

It's getting there but a lot of things are gone. Caneel Bay and Zozo's at the Sugar Mill are gone and probably won't be back. The Westin is still in the process of reopening so visitors will have to deal with construction noise.

Bech Bar and Joe's Rum Hut opened recently so Wharfside is fully operational which is huge for the island. The ferries to the BVI are starting to come back on a limited bases but other than Tortola and St. Thomas the ferries aren't operating nearly as much as they were which is mostly due to damaged docks that still aren't fully repaired in the BVI.

Jost van Dyke got lucky as Kenny Chesney donated enough money to rebuild the ferry docks there. Day trippers to the BVI are paying a premium for entry into the BVI presently and several locations in the BVI are checking visitors in and out in tents as those buildings still haven't been rebuilt or repaired.

I'll be staying on St. John and Jost for 12 nights at the end of May and early June and I'll post a report then.

Don't shy away from visiting. The people down there are wonderful and they need our money now more than ever so they can continue to rebuild.

we have a trip planned for the end of June, staying in Cruz Bay - St John. Does anyone know if the Cruz Bay ferry is running to Jost daily?

It's on a limited schedule right now. St. John to Jost is Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Let's hope they can improve the schedule soon.

It's not a cheap option but you can use a water taxi service like Dolphin Water Taxi as an aternative to the ferry.

We will probably take the ferry over on Sunday then, what bars/other places should we hit on Jost for the day? Will be first time heading to jost.

White Bay you have One Love, Gertrude's and Soggy. If you can get over to Great Harbour you have Corsair's (Vinny is a great guy but his drinks are too fricking expensive as is his food) and of course, Foxy's.

I'd also suggest you pop in to Ivan's Stress Free Bar on White Bay but I've heard that Ivan is in poor health and the bar may not be open.

I'd stick with those two bays. White Bay is where the party is everyday and it's a lot of fun. One Love has great lobster quesadillas. Be forewarned that the service is very slow and one order easily feeds two people. They are huge. Soggy serves a pretty good lunch as well. I haven't eaten at Gertrude's so I can't vouch for her food. There are a couple of other bars on White Bay. Coco Loco is fine and fun. I avoid Hendo's Hideout for a couple of reasons. They're trying to be upscale and they built right next to Soggy and they're trying to poach business by proximity.

VABuckeye - we are looking at doing St. Croix May 25 - 28, and St. John May 29 - June 2. Wanted to do St. Croix as I worked on the island for about 5 mnoths at the HOVENSA refinery back in 2011 and haven't visited since.

It looks like the St. Croix to St. Thomas ferry (which didn't operate for many years) if now operational again on every day but Wednesday.

We were on St. Croix a few years ago and enjoyed the island. The beer drinking pigs were funny as could be and we found a lot of good dining on the island including La Reine Chicken Shack. I'm sure you know the spots to hit but if you haven't eaten at Savant in Christiansted I'd give it a try. Great ambience and great food. It seems that the food is better on the east and obviously the beaches are all towards the western side of the island.

I'll be on St. John from May 25th until June 3rd. Maybe a beer or a bushwacker at Beach Bar or Joe's Rum Hut one day? I enjoy meeting people from TD. I'll be the old fricker in flip flops and a basebfall hat. Shorts and t-shirt as well of course.

Speaking of refineries and St. Croix I've heard rumors that they're going to or have reopened the big refinery near Christiansted. That would be great for the economy of St. Croix.

Yep, they did tell me that 4-5 places weren’t planning to reopen. I remember Zozo’s being mentioned.

I'm very fortunate that I get to go at least once a year. A buddy has a condo in Cruz Bay and our birthdays are one day apart (June 1 and 2) so we always celebrate our birthdays together on an island and except for one year (St. Kitts & Nevis) we've celebrated on St. John and the BVI.

Your buddy doesn’t have a law degree from Ole Miss does he? Might be a different guy but the person that owned the little resort/condo where I stayed was owned by an Ole Miss grad. Treated us well for the 4 weeks I was there.
