We flew back from Denver to MSY yesterday and had a ~3 hour delay in Denver for no reason at all.

When we got on the plane, I overheard people talking about getting reimbursed for delays >3 hours.

Is this a thing I should look into? Even worth it?

Depends on a lot of factors. One reason I quit flying SW is they got more stringent on taking care of people and eliminated their executive hotline for their A-List Preferred customers.

Most airlines will give a voucher or points for any delay over 2hrs that isn't weather related. Worth giving them a call. You'll prob get a 50 or 100 dollar travel voucher out of it.

ETA: The delay wasn't for no reason at all. Was the inbound aircraft already there and just sat? If it was delayed coming in, it could have been due to weather impacting other segments, which they will claim falls outside of comp guidelines, but may still give a little something.

The tried and true way to get compensated is mechanical issues.

I'm sure it was for something. But we had no weather in Denver and no weather in MSY. I was checking the planes status on Flight Aware and it had been at the airport for some time maybe even a few hours. They came on the mic at the 3 hour mark and said it was an international flight and went to the wrong gate in another terminal and they were still doing inspections and would be at our gate soon. Then we had about another 45 minute wait.

You may be able to get a little something for that if you call in.

Anything with inbound being international can be a pain because of customs and the inspections that take place before they are released for the next flight, but shouldn't take 3hrs, even if it went to a different gate and had to be moved.

Just call and say you were inconvenienced by a 3hr delay that wasn't due to weather, as the inbound aircraft landed on time, but was diverted to the wrong gate and that started a domino effect resulting in the delay.
