South Africa train trip: Ravos Rail or Blue Train?
Has anyone done either of these? I see really mixed reviews. Lots of people complaining about the poor track conditions leading to delays. But if you're not really in a hurry, I'm not sure if that's a big deal.

Myself and two teenage daughters. Summer of 2022.

Thanks for any insight!

I've done both of them.

Took the Blue Train from Cape Town up to Jo-burg with a stop in wine country. Very luxurious as you would expect, with tons of attention to detail. The food and drink were excellent and we enjoyed meeting new people on the train.

That being said, Rovos Rail was a step above. We had a private train through Zambia (Lusaka to Vic Falls) and...it was insane. The luxury was that of the Blue Train, except more, and the fact that they used restored cars from the golden age of rail made it even more special.

Can't go wrong with either. Enjoy the trip.

I’ve also done both.

Agree Rovos Rail is better. Only catch is they take longer. They stop for excursions in Kimberley and Majiesfontein.

Rovos had an open platform at the end of the train where you could sit in the open and watch Africa go by.

Departing from their Pretoria station is amazing. String quartet, canapés, sparkling wine and an introduction by Rohan Vos. Plus a tour of their museum. When I went, they did the first 30 miles under steam, although I think they had to stop due to lack of water and coal.

I know, right? This place is amazing!

Thanks for both replies. My outfitter also recommended Ravos Rail. So I guess that's where we're headed. Will report!

Can you tell me what your itinerary looks like?

I'm in very early planning stages for an Africa trip next year and I'm deciding between SA and Tanzania + Zanzibar.
