So airlines are using “basic economy” on international flight too, now?

When did this start? Looking at flights from Houston to milan and delta wants $120 a ticket to upgrade to regular economy. I know it’s not much but it sucks seeing a good price for a flight and then realizing it’s for shite arse “basic economy”

Highly recommend paying extra for an exit row seat if you don't want to upgrade to economyPlus.
Not sure for Delta but British airways wanted my wife and I to pay an extra $100 or so a ticket the guarantee that we could sit next to one another on our flight to London from MSY. We laughed at that and upgraded to economy plus for $150 ticket-better liquor menu, inflight food options and leg room.
Airliners can get you on the plane for cheap but they make their money off all these extras that the basic traveler does not know about.

Everyone always sees it as charging more but I see it as offering cheaper options.
There's no reason airlines should have ever given all the free items they used to. If I don't need a bag, don't need a soda, and don't need extra leg room then why average the price of all that out and charge everyone? You can see it as nickle and diming or see it as charging people for only what they need/ want.
On the same note, I rode Frontier to Denver for like $79 each way and they have 2 rows with extra leg room. 2 whole rows on the 737 so 12 seats they wanted $50 extra for each seat for a 2.5 hour flight. Only 1 person chose it. The other 11 seats were empty. Seemed like crap business but I'm sure they fill them more often than my flight.

Pretty much standard fare these days. For international flights we've ended up just always picking premium economy.

I dunno, basic economy suits me most of the time. I don’t check a bag, and the fee to pick a seat has been far less than the upgrade cost to premium economy on the last three international tickets I booked. Couldn’t care less about the liquor choices or food. I’m just flying to get from point A to B.

I'll tell you what pisses me off, is they keep trying to charge me to choose seats with kids. If you are flying with someone under 10, your seat selection should be free.
I've told multiple gate attendance they are more then welcome to sit my 3 year old 2 aisles away from me and by herself. Let's see how that works out for them. Is not that I deserve free seat selection, its that the Airline does not want a kid sitting without a parent.

Check if you credit cards offer an allowance for airline charges like baggage etc

We have done the “basic economy” on Delta a few times. We’ve got the Delta Amex so it covers a checked bag for everyone in the party. The only thing we don’t get is seat selection and for an extra $150-200 per person we decide we’d rather spend that money on a better hotel or experiences at our destination.
We still get the meal, drinks, and everything you’d get in regular ole economy for an international flight.

Delta has a B/E fare from JFK-MAD for $225 RT in Jan. For an extra $90 you can get a main cabin fare, which includes:
Check 1st bag free
Select available seat(s), incl. seats together
Ticket changes or upgrades
Earlier access to overhead bin space
Yeah, I think I'll pass on all that. I can fit my clothes in a carry-on. Moreover, at that time of year, there should be plenty of empty seats where you can sit with loved ones if you're so inclined. Also, at that price, the cost for a ticket change is probably more than the fare itself. In short, B/E works out just fine -- for me.
