Since many people love to visit the GRSMNP thought I would pass this along for anyone visiting in the winter. Also there will be intermittent paving closures in same area starting in March after the tunnel work is completed.

There was also supposed to be a closure to the main entrance road to Cataloochee Valley for repairs but that has been delayed for now.

quote:

Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials remind visitors that Laurel Creek Road, the seven-mile access road leading from the Townsend Wye to Cades Cove, will be closed to all motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 5 through Saturday, February 29 to repair the Bote Mountain Tunnel. The full closure, beginning just past Tremont Road, is necessary to allow equipment set-up for the repair of the internal drainage system in the walls and ceiling of the 121-foot long tunnel. Crews will enclose and heat the tunnel, allowing the temperature-sensitive repairs to be conducted during the winter months when visitation is lower. Intermittent single-lane closures will be necessary between March 1 and June 15 to complete the tunnel repairs and to re-pave the tunnel area.

Is this closure going to shut off access to Cade's Cove? Laurel Creek Road and Little River Gorge Road are my favorite driving areas in the whole park.

Yes. We used to take our mountain bikes over rich mountain to get down into it so that might still be an option for cyclists.

Could be a chilly ride since its only during that time frame. Would be cool if they opened it one way in and let people go out Parsons, would have to allow Parsons to be open during the winter though.

Yep is shutting off access, there was debate about Rich Mountain Rd and Parsons being used for access but decides not to pursue it.
