Went to Secrets in costa rica and would not go back. All inclusives are just not my thing. I tried.

the turn offs were the people. Everyone was trashy, trying to drink their money's worth. We went with a group of 4 couples and I just got too hammered all day.

re: Secrets Playa Mujeres
Went there 4-5 (maybe 3?) years ago for a VERY last minute trip after Christmas and over NYE. Chose this property because was the only one in Mexico/Caribbean that had availability and wasn't $6k/night.

It had been open for maybe 2 months when we got there. Beautiful property.

Now for the negative:

Employees had zero training--none. It was hilariously bad.

Food was horrible.

It was bowl season and I wanted to watch a few games. Good news! They have a massive sports bar. The drawback was that it wasn't staffed. Talked to front desk, a couple of managers and then the GM. Said they would have someone there ASAP. So, we waited and waited and waited. By this time, several other guests joined us to watch football...no staff. So, it became self-serve.

We figured out the TVs and AV after about 30 minutes; I felt pretty accomplished.

On NYE, went up to our room after the fireworks to find a fire-hose level of water pouring from our ceiling onto the bed. Good inch of water on the floor. Luckily all of our belongings were on the luggage rack or hanging in the closet.

Took someone 30 minutes to come up to the room to investigate. By that time, we were already packed. Took them another 2 hours to find us a room.

Got a few hours of sleep and checked out that morning and went home early.

After a few months, got nearly a full refund.

Good times!

It was by far the worst AI I have ever stayed at. I went with a large group last October, and wish we would have gone somewhere else.

This was also our experience when we went. The service at all of the restaurants was bad. We went to the Brazilian Steakhouse, and our waiter served 4 people and then left the rest of us without food. Room service took an average of about 60-90 minutes to get to our room no mater the time or order size. If you haven't book yet save your money and check out Secrets Maroma or Akumal.

We tend to avoid anything near Cancun as we have not had good experiences. We like the AI resorts further south on the way to Tulum. Catalonia Royal Tulum is our favorite, but many in the area are good. Negative is you have a longer bus ride, but it is more secluded. The beaches in the Yucatan have been littered with sargasm seaweed, so be prepared.

Stay right down the beach at Excellence. There's a reason it's consistently near the top of the best all-inclusive list.

Excellence PM was a great trip. Sand gravity & Zero Stress. Do what you want, when you feel like it.

The alcohol selection is good and the food is decent. You’re not going to have the best meal in your life, but you won’t be disappointed.

Look at Unico 2087. The beach is not great there — even when there is no seaweed, but go for the pools, food and drink quality, service and rooms. The whole style is like Restoration Hardware meets Modern Mexico. The restaurants were unbelievably good. Every inch was perfectly clean and smelled amazing —- even in the outdoor hallways — not sure how they did that! They also offer excursions and spa at a discounted price.

Also look at Excellence Playa Mujeres (always very highly rated), Secrets Maroma, Valentin Imperial Maya, Secrets Akumal.

There is a new AI in Playa Mujeres called Atelier Playa Mujeres — it has been in soft opening and is getting rave reviews. The pics look beautiful and the prices are a little cheaper right now.

I went to EPM last year and Valentin this year. EPM is a little more higher class but the beach wasn’t great. Valentin is some of the best bang for your buck I’ve been to. The pool and beach was awesome (we got lucky with no seaweed when we went). The food was middle of the road but food isn’t my main concern when I go to resorts. The shows at night was the best of any AI I’ve stayed at and I’ve stayed at about 5-6

We just got back from Atelier. Pretty sweet as occupancy was around 20% but I suspect it will be a different experience when fully booked. TripAdvisor reviews are pretty spot on but I haven’t seen one mention the snorkeling. Sea grass beds start about 15 yards from the beach and are teaming with life. 30-40 yards out was just as good as any excursion you would pay with the added bonus of no one around to bother you.- (no lifeguard either) I’d go back just for the snorkeling as long as rates don’t jump dramatically. Sargassum was minimal when we were there 7/27-8/3.

What room category did you have at Atelier? And do you wish you had picked a different one?

re: Secrets Playa Mujeres
We did junior suite king bed, ended up on golf course side w/partial ocean view. I was content with our room.

We talked with a couple that got the swim out and they wished they didn't. Their initial room was on back side facing the golf course. In front of their swim out was the path to get to the beach from the new Estudio section, also used by maintenance. They switched to a pool side swim out and said there is no privacy from the main pool area. There were a couple of guys that used the swim out area as their private football field. Would've pissed me off if I was in one of those rooms.

pic from our room on second floor. The little garden area blocks view of cart path

re: Secrets Playa Mujeres
We went at the end of June and had an Oceanview/Poolview. We had a good time and enjoyed ourselves. We would go back in a heartbeat.

The food is ok, but you are at a resort not New Orleans. I can post about the individual restaurants if you want. The ceviche at Oceana is awesome. I think we ate it everyday.

The drinks are good and the staff is friendly. The beach and water is beautiful. The beach is more chill and the pool is a party all day.I would get down to the pool or beach early (~8am) to get the shaded spots. Breakfast starts at 7.

When you sign in, they will try to get you to go to a "special breakfast." Tell them firmly, NO. Its a sales pitch to join the timeshare club. There are almost no perks to being a member. We skipped it. Its a waste of 3 hours of your time.

Also, check out channel 28 on the tv.
