Savannah Trip March 2018 w/ pictures

We took a quick trip to Savannah this past weekend; stayed 2 nights. The highpoint was a visit to Bonaventure Cemetery as the azaleas were in bloom.



This is a monument to Confederate General Henry Rootes Jackson. He died in 1898 and the granite still looks new except some of the etchings have faded. That odd looking monument behind it is from 1833.

We also drove to Tybee Island and ate at CoCo's Sunset Grill as it was recommended by many on the TB. We were there for lunch but dinner is probably a better time if the weather is nice as you can set outside and watch the sunset.

I had fried oysters, steamed shrimp, fries and cole slaw. She had fried shrimp, fries and sautéed vegetable. We also had a cup of seafood bisque. It was all very good.



This is a view of the walk way in town that parallels the river on one side and River Street on the other. This was right at dusk.



We considered taking the paddle boat cruise but the schedule did not work. Maybe next time. That is the Westin Hotel in the background. It is across the river next to the convention center. There are shuttle boats that carry folks back and forth.



Another attraction of Savannah are the city squares. This is one about a block off of Bay Street. These and the homes that surround them are what make Savannah a trip worth taking imo.



We stayed at the Homewood Suites on the far east end of River/Bay Street. On another trip we stayed at the Double Tree on the far west end of Bay Street. Of the two I prefer the Double Tree as it is closer to more restaurants, etc. Homewood did have a roof top bar w/ entertainment that was nice but it was too cold and windy to enjoy it.

The next time we go I think we will stay off of Bay Street. I noticed a place called Hamilton Turner Inn which is on the perimeter of one of the squares. The rates are comparable to the hotels and it just looks like an interesting place to stay.

We also ate at Jazz's Tapas Bar. The food was good but the mixed drink was a little weak, and they had live music. The waitress said the portions were larger than a typical tapas bar's but smaller than a normal meal. That was just right for us that night.

On the way out of town we stopped at Pie Society, "a traditional English bakery". We had a sausage and apple pastry and an apple Danish for breakfast. It was excellent. A lot of travelers recommended it and several raved about the chicken pot pie. Should have gotten one to go.

My take away. Savannah is worth going to, especially if you like history and have already been to Charleston. If you are a millennial then River Street may interest you; baby boomers, probably not so much (we've seen that before in other places and other decades).

If you go, prepare to pay for parking. It cost $30/night at the hotel and $2/hour if you park on the street, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm 7 days a week.
