Sarasota up to Anna Marie Island is awesome. Sarasota is starting to look a bit like a mini Miami but then you drive north through longboat key and then to Anna Marie and it goes from Miami to old school beach Florida.

St Armands circle is where you will be told to go, buts its just ok. There was a good cuban restaurant in the circle but I don't recall the name. Dry Dock on longboat key was a good meal. Had lunch at O'Learys Tiki Bar. Don't remember much about the meal but it was a fun atmosphere. Many restaurants can be reached by boat so if you have that option use it. The Ringling Circus museum was unexpectedly good.

I recommend taking the drive up to Anna Marie and stopping by the different beaches along the way. Each beach is a little different.

Walt's Fish Market & Restaurant
Phillipi Creek Restaurant and Oyster Bar
Star Fish Company Seafood Market & Restaurant

I'd describe all 3 as casual.

Walts and Phillipi are on the main drag Tamiami Trail.
Star Fish is in Cortez close to Anna Maria Island so a bit of a drive and it's also a dive. You eat at a picnic table right on the docks. I love places like that though. Oh yeah... CASH ONLY at Star Fish.

We stayed on Lido Beach and took a shuttle to St. Armands Circle. Tons of little shops and bar/cafe type places.

Columbia Restaurant on St Armands. Always enjoy walking the circle; note that paid parking in places is via an App ( i forget which one).

Second the recommendation for Star Fish in Cortez.

We also enjoy Beach House just over the bridge from Cortez to the south. Also Gulf Drive Cafe has been good for breakfast. These are a bit more touristy.

Nice walk around the Bayfront Park in Sarasota. Had some good food at O'Leary's Tiki Bar and Grill.

Sandbar on Anna Maria has always had a reputation among the locals. I haven't been there in years but friends still mention it.
