Also want to add that we prefer small towns over big cities, hence staying outside of SD proper - I know that we won't run out of things to do in 4 days in SD, but I can't help but feel like we'll regret not spending more time in the smaller towns along the coast.

Definitely more things to do/events in SD than coastal south orange county, but the towns along the coast from Huntington to San Clemente are nice relaxing places to visit. Not small towns per se, but suburbia on the coast with lots of restaurants, hikes, and all around good living.

I wouldn’t worry about having regrets, you’ll enjoy your time no matter how you split it up. That whole coastal region can’t be beat. It’ll make you question why Cali gets a bad rep…..and then you wander around LA and go “oh, I see”.

If we had to book today it’d be 4 days in La Jolla and 3 in Laguna.
