If the mission is to just chill, I would book a vrbo in telluride. Most beautiful scenery of any resort area in Colorado, in my opinion.

Since I've found out about Fredericksburg it has changed the way I will travel westward!
I think that'll be my first stop from BR next trip.
I've always driven to either Trinidad or Raton on day one! A tough 16-17 hours...
I love road trips though.

Wow I just looked up Telluride on Google maps, looks beautiful indeed. It's near Ouray which is where I found the bnb I was looking at.
Do you have any recommendations for a specific VRBO in Telluride?

Fly Southwest out of Houston and rent a vehicle in Denver. The drive there will take some of the wind out of your sails to thoroughly enjoy Co.

Well, I would definitely stay in Telluride as opposed to Mountain Village. Nothing wrong with MV, but Telluride has that old western town charm. There is a gondola that will take you from Telluride up the mountain to MV for restaurants, skiing, some shopping. The ride up the gondola at night is amazing. Search thru vrbo for a place that fits your needs, pick the closest one to the gondola in your price range. Most of Telluride is easily walkable and there a some great restaurants and little bars, a grocery store, and other shops nearby. You won't regret it.

Also, the New Sheridan Hotel is awesome

Telluride looks like an awesome place, I am definitely keeping it in mind.
Just trying to decide if we should drive or fly. Seems like it would make more sense to drive if we end up going to Telluride. Flying into Denver I'd have to rent a car and drive 6 hours to get to Telluride, seems like a waste of 6 hours, no? And then obviously time it just right to drive 6 hours back to Denver for the flight back home.

You can fly into Montrose, which is only about 60 miles away though a little bit more expensive than flying to Denver. Could take a shuttle to Telluride from MTJ and save the cost of car rental, which should make up the difference in the increased flight cost. I wouldn't fly into Denver to visit any city in western Colorado, especially in winter. If it were me, without kids, I would just save the money and drive instead of flying if Western Colorado is the destination.
Vail, Breckenridge, Aspen/Snowmass, and Steamboat are also nice options, even if you don't ski. Those places can be easily accessed via Denver, or Eagle Airport for a little more $$$

Thanks everyone. Seems like it would be much less of a headache to fly. We will look into this.

Durango has some decent air service , depending on the time of year. 2 hrs to Telluride, less to Ourey
