car rental contract forbids driving on unpaved side of hana. if u have a jeep that will be ok but it is not worth the bumps. kerp going past hana to the waterfalls and then go back thru hana. well worth the time. if u want to see moonscape go to the big island. it is mostly lava.

FYI:
The backside of the Road to Hana is closed until further notice. Until at least late November, probably longer.
Dangerous conditions. Your rental car forbids driving on it anyway, but now you can't even if you wanted to.

1) What is the "other side of the loop" of the Hana Road like, I thought it was pretty much drive to Hana, turn around and drive back. I know you didn't do it, but from what you've heard, is it worth doing it?
My wife and I decided to take the road around after getting to Hana. I do not recommend. It may have improved since we were there (15 years ago) but it was a narrow dirt road and you are ISOLATED. Nothing but a volcano on one side of you and the ocean on the other for miles. It's really pretty but after a little while you just want to get back to civilization asap. It was such a relief when we finally saw the lights from Wailea and knew we were almost done.
Other than that Maui is an amazing place to visit. Can't recommend enough.

You can't even do it right now even if you wanted to.
