Kids went to see family in VA last week and were disappointed they weren't able to at least visit the beach as in past years. Now, they are after me to take them to a beach, and I've been promising to take them to a Houston Astros game. I was thinking about combining the two--heading to Galveston for a couple of days and then catching an Astros game before heading back.

The only thing I'm wondering is how good (or bad) the Galveston Island beaches are. I would assume the water would be dark/muddy--similar to Grand Isle and other LA spots. But, does anyone know if there are decent public beach facilities over there? Kids are 8 and 10, so they're not overly concerned about cosmetics--they just want water and sand.

You are correct. Very similar to Grand Isle in that regard. Try the beaches on the west end. They may fit your needs best. Besides, this time of the year the water is at its clearest and the seaweed had waned so you may be in luck.

Galveston's main attractions are not the beachs but the other things like Moody Gardens, Schliterbahn, and the Strand. There is a lot to do in Galveston and a lot of good quality restaurants.

Get ready to see a lot of Asian families.

Do yourself a favor, rent a creek house in Sargent tx. Not far southwest of Houston. One with a dock out back to fish on. There is also a decent beach.

I just visited the beaches for the first time and thought they sucked.
The water was not bad as I knew it would be a little brownish, but the sand was like spillway dirt and full of shells.
There are no bars or condos on the beach side except for this one dump on a pier.
It might be worth it for the kids for a quick visit for a day, but that's about it

Go 20 miles West of the island to Surfside Beach. But like everybody says, it ain't Destin.

This is correct about the beaches. The sand in front of the Sea Wall and Stewart Beach is actually dredged sand that they have put there.

However, most of the action in Galveston is focused around the Strand the Moody Gardens areas. There is the Pleasure Pier on the Sea Wall, and a few other places.

I enjoy Galveston because I like the restaurants and other attractions. But don't go and expect Destin. If you are looking for that experience in Texas you must go to SPI. We never go to the beach in Galveston.

If you go with this attitude, Stewart beach (West side) is perfect. It's been built up alot the past 10 years. The facilities are mostly new. There are usually a few extra things for kids that age (kite demos, giant slides, etc...) on the beach to. Lots of parking available. The water is what it is, and the sand isn't white, but your kids will get what they want out of it.

I find the water to be EXTREMELY itchy. To the point where I've gotten rashes from it. I don't know if it has to do with shaving my legs too soon before going into the water .. or if it is truly the water there. But it is almost unbearable.

Stewart is the family friendly beach where I don't think alcohol is allowed. East Beach is the one where alcohol is allowed. Both are $8 per car. Then the seawall is just the regular ole beach off of the road. The $8 ones are nicer. They have facilities to use too.
