Would be 2 days of skiing over a weekend. Preference would be for first morning of ski school for my wife and a location that offers night skiing so she can get 2 full days of skiing in. Both of us are skiing, not snowboarding.

Bridger Bowl - Bozeman, MT
Steamboat Springs - Steamboat, CO
Wolf Creek - Pagosa Springs, CO
Alta - Alta, UT

I could also consdier Vail or Park City...but both seem to be a little more costly.

Too cold to be enjoyable IMO

Depends on the budget and how close you want to be to the skiing itself. All are great places. The closest place to stay to Wolf Creek is South Fork 15 miles away which offers very little amenity and entertainment wise, but the mountain is cheap, not crowded, and all around awesome.

Steamboat would be a great choice. Covers all your bases and yours truly lives here!

So, so easy from the SLC airport. If you stay in Sandy, UT you can get to 4 different mountains in 45 minutes.

And Alta is skiing only, right? They should have a ski school for the wife. Then go to Brighton/Solitude/Snowbird for the second day.

ETA:Solitude was one of my favorite ski days ever. Fresh powder to my knees.

night skiing

Not a great idea with a beginner. Cold, icey, with low visibility.

Since you are skiing on the weekend I would avoid anywhere 2 hours or less from a major city to avoid the weekend warrior crowds. That would take Alta off your list and also Vail and PC if you reconsider them. Out of your remaining 3 I would choose Steamboat as well based on your criteria. They have night skiing(but it will be cold at night and it does require buying a separate lift ticket from the daytime lift ticket).

I love Wolf Creek but it is very remote and tough to get to and there isn't any night skiing. Pagosa springs is on one side of the pass and has more lodging and restaurants but is farther from the ski area than south fork and that side of the pass will close more often as well during a heavy snow storm.

I know nothing about Bridger Bowl.

Steamboat offers night skiing with fresh groomed trails. They close from 4-5:30 and re-groom before they open night skiing. It is also free if you fly into Hayden Airport the same day.

Definitely can get icey at night, but it all depends on the snow conditions. Night skiing isn't just always icey and miserable. It can be a great way to get on the mountain when it's less crowded.

Correct.

I'm pretty sure I went night skiing on my first trip and did fine...just stuck to some easy runs.

Wife is quick learner/athletic and such. But we'll see how it goes and avoid the night skiing if conditions aren't right.

I've never been to Wolf Creek but out of the other 3 there is no doubt that I would go to Steamboat if it is just a weekend trip.

Alta because it's big, not too crowded and mostly because Brighton and Solitude are near it. Brighton is cheaper, a locals place, and just has some really great runs

Bridger is a locals mountain. If you're going to come to Bozeman, ski Big Sky. I'm guessing you picked it because of the airport proximity. It's close, but there's no place to stay on the hill.

Are you limited to that area for some reason?
Skiing in Banff is literally half the price.

I couldn't get the flights to/from Banff to work.

We actually booked Steamboat this morning. Was able to transfer Marriott points to Starwood and get a room at the resort at the base of the mountain.

I LOVE Bridger. You're like an hour away from Big Sky if you want more of a resort feel. The backside of Big Sky used to be Moonlight Basin, but I believe it's all owned by Big Sky now.

I have friends who have season passes to Bridger. They live in Bozeman. No lift lines ever. I have been going to Bridger (and Big Sky) every year for almost ten years now. I'll be headed that way over Mardi Gras.

Hell yeah! When y'all coming in?

I could help ya out with some rentals. I'll need to tell ya about the golf course I'm working at here in the Boat. It's an amazing property.

First weekend in February. Picking up our friends in Ft. Collins and heading over. He's got buddy passes for us at Steamboat.

I'll bump this thread a little closer once we figure out rentals and such.

Is there anyone in town that rents out bibs, gloves, and goggles? I've got a jacket but don't really need to spring for all the other stuff if we can rent some there.

FWIW:

I bought a pair of ski pants for $27
You can get gloves for $30-40
Goggles - $50

For just over $100 you own the shite. I can't imagine that renting for $50-75 is worth it

Perfect.

I had backpacker/masseys prices in mind... forgetting that I could snag this stuff online for cheap

Yeah, i couldn't force myself to buy $150 pants when I only ski every few years (I hope that changes).

I bought two pair of pants for less than $60, and the quality is much better than I expected.

Gordini gloves are sold at the backpacker fwiw.
