Passport Name Question

Wife and I are planning a short trip to France in August. We were married back in 2018 but never changed the name on her passport. Will we be ok to travel with her maiden name on the passport as long as I book flights and everything using her maiden name? We would bring other documents like marriage certificate as backup documentation.

The passport is valid until the expiration date. Immigration officials in the EU are almost certainly not going to care. Tons of EU folks co-habitate (Canadians do this too) for years without getting married and/or name changing. They don't care about you as a couple, they care about your identity as individuals.
I don't think you have much of a choice anyway, because you're under 90 days from travel, and you need to send the passport in and pray for a name change. I don't see any possible way without calling a member of Congress to get a passport "renewed" within the next 60 days.

You may be eligible to renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82 or apply in person using Form DS-11.
Can I renew by mail?
You can renew by mail using Form DS-82 if your most recent passport:
Is submitted with your application
Is undamaged (other than normal "wear and tear")
Was issued when you were age 16 or older
Was issued within the last 15 years
Was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate or court order)

As long as the name on travel documents match, you will be fine.

Book in maiden name and use the passport at all checkpoints domestically and internationally.

Figure I'd add a related point. Do always book tickets matching exactly what your passport says. Rather famously, Cathay Pacific were real shitheads about this. If your passport said James Orenthal Simpson and you put James O. Simpson or left off the middle name altogether on your ticket, they would deny boarding. Just good practice.

As long as her passport is valid and her travel reservations have her maiden name for her flights, it won't matter at all.
