Parents need hotel rec for San Francisco

My dad asked me to reach out and ask for a hotel recommendation for my parents’ trip to SF on July 10. He is looking for “a decent priced hotel in a good area kind of near the tourist things like the Golden Gate bridge or fisherman‘s wharf or whatever.” They have never been to SF.
They are also looking into a Napa Valley “wine train” tour of some sort. Is anyone familiar?
TIA!

Perhaps others have an idea about an off-the-radar place, but this unfortunately might be virtually impossible. Airbnb might have something. Otherwise, you might be staying outside the city and taking the BART each day. Downtown Oakland is surprisingly gentrified and "hip" now, so it might be a place to find a good deal on priceline.

Golden Gate bridge is beautiful. On the other hand, I felt Fisherman's Wharf is supremely touristy and overrated. (The stench of pot is really strong there too.) I would much rather spend time in the Italian district off Columbus Ave. There are some amazing restaurants in that area, and I'm particularly fond of Piccolo Forno for a reasonably priced meal.
Also, I would go to the Ferry building in the morning for ACME bread and Blue Bottle coffee. You can have a beautiful view of the bay while enjoying your meal.
Napa is a great place to visit, but I actually would prefer renting a car for the day so I could really see the gorgeous countryside. My girlfriend took some form of the wine train tour with a couple of her friends and really enjoyed it, though. It tends to be very popular with women who want to maintain a strong buzz all day.
A final piece of advice is to download the Munimetro app and get daily passes for $5. SF is a surprisingly exhausting city to walk around, and the daily pass lets you take the light rail and bus systems anywhere in the city, as much as you like. The fun part of San Francisco is visiting all the different neighborhoods, and it's a great way to see the zoo, Golden Gate park, Lands End, the Presidio, South Beach, etc.

I can recommend the small hotels of the Joie de Vivre group: a collection of Euro style smaller properties. Some are inn style, with breakfast included but no restaurants or bar onsite. Others are larger, more full service. Pricing point for location on the San Francisco properties is usually pretty good.
Not sure what you consider affordable, but the Hotel Carlton is around $250/night for July 10 timeframe.
If that’s too pricey, remember that the BART can have you in SF pretty quickly and cheaply. Hotels near SFO airport are usually cheaper than city center.

My wife and I visited SF last month. Stayed at the Scarlet Huntington on California street. We thoroughly enjoyed it. It is in Nob Hill, not far from Union Square. There is a streetcar line on California that connects to the main line to FW. The Huntington also has a free town car that will take you within a couple mile radius of the hotel.
We took a private car from the airport to the hotel and then rented a car in town for a couple of days to do day trips to Napa and Monterey.

We love the Garden Orchard hotel. It’s at the gates of Chinatown and a short walk from Coit tower.

Not walking distance, or anything, from the Wharf or Golden Gate, but I highly-recommend one of the hotels along California in Nob Hill (i.e. Huntington, Intercontinental, Stanford, Fairmont). Easy walk to Chinatown (Lyft/Uber back since its all uphill) and quick ride to the Wharf. I don't take cable cars, but pretty sure you can hop on one near the hotels.

Hotel Carlton has no a/c and there are hot days in the summer, so not a good choice. Also, its on the edge of the tenderloin district (rough area with more vagrants than most).
BART is really dicey these days, so I wouldn't suggest using it.
As others have recommended, the Nob Hill area is really nice and you can walk everywhere from there. Will need to take the streetcar back up to the hotel (steep hike).

quote:Tough to answer that question based on the vague term of "decently priced". I have been a few times and usually stay in the Fisherman's Wharf area just because the people I am with want to do the touristy stuff. I think my favorite place that we have stayed was the Sheraton down there. The Holiday Inn there was decent, too. We shopped at the Trader Joe's around the corner from both for food when we didn't feel like overpaying for poor quality tourist food.

Every times I arrived in SFO without a hotel reservation and used the Hotel Tonight app. Every time I check to see if rooms are filling up before we leave. Every time has also been a last minute trip for us, too so this might vary with a lot of people and their level of comfort for last minute travel arrangements. If you find something down in that area, just stick with the reviews on the websites (Orbitz, Hotel.com, Priceline, etc.) Take the BART from the airport to the closest station. As long as you're in that area, you're always a quick walk or cheap Uber away from what you want to do. I don't think I have ever paid more than $8 for a Lyft there, going from the Embarcadero station (couple blocks from the Financial District, couple more blocks to the Ferry Terminal) to Fisherman's Wharf.

Not as often as you'd think.
