Soberania National Park is amazing and just 30 minutes outside of the city. I saw so much wildlife on my hike there.

How about stuff within the city? We aren’t that adventurous

Casco Viejo is worthwhile for shops, restaurants, and bars. It's very safe with a good amount of police enforcement, but be sure to stay on the 'red brick road.' Gets dicey quick if you venture off. First time I was there with friends, we got a little too drunk and ended up in a not-so-great situation because we didn't know where we were going

The casco viejo area was nice, its basically like the Vieux Carre in New Orleans, but not as touristy. Keep in mind that i was there over a decade ago!
Here you go: Casco Viejo
Also, if you get the chance to stop in Colon, which is on the Caribbean side of the canal, DON'T , its a shitehole

There's only so much to do in Panama City. It sounds like you have maybe a day outside of your canal visit, in which case just do Casco Viejo.

I've never been anywhere that's reminded me as much of New Orleans. Look at this photo I took in 2015. The only way you'd figure out that it's not the French Quarter is if you zoom in to read the signs.

In 2015, we grabbed a cab at Casco Viejo, gave him a US 20, and he drove us sightseeing, up to the view point of the Canal, and to the market for some ceviche, a few random things, he loved it and we had a good cheap tour.

Nice museum about the Canal - The Interoceanic Canal Museum / Museo del Canal Interoceánico (Casco Viejo)

The Canal Zone Hdqtrs is interesting built when US ran the show.

Punta Culebra Nature Center located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal on the Amador Causeway, This is one of several research facilities operated by the Smithsonian. The exhibits are modest but interesting. Old artillery emplacements are everywhere dating to when it was US Fort Amador.
