Thanks to the credit card thread I pulled the trigger on a couple of cards that netted a good haul of points over the last two years. I finally had some time to burn a good chunk and go to Hawaii. We flew United to Honolulu on the nonstop flight (8hrs) from Houston. I booked economy and was OK with the flight going (10am departure) but the return red-eye was a bear. I booked seats 50 a&b since it was a 2 seat row and not 3 or 4 seats in the row. The extra space next to the window and aisle was nice.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites Waikiki (Hhonors points) that was one block from the beach. Nice clean hotel with big breakfast and drinks at night. Lots of restaurants close by and only about 20 minutes form the airport. There is a Yard House attached to the hotel that you can get some good beers and watch sports. Here are pics from hotel and the beach.

The first day we went on a Turtle Canyon snorkel tour. It was a mid-day tour and included lunch and drinks. We saw some colorful fish and about 10 sea turtles. The water was really clear! We snorkeled for an hour then went back on board and ate sandwiches , pasta and a couple other things. The bar was opened and we had several beers and cocktails while we sailed along Waikiki and then back to the harbor.

The next day we went to North Shore Shark Adventure in Haleiwa about an hour north of Honolulu . It was a blast! It rained on the way there and I was worried the seas would be rough due to an approaching cold front. It turned out the seas were very calm and no one chummed the area. They put 6-8 people in the shark cage at a time and you are in the water about 20-30 minutes depending on the number of people.

We thought it was cool to see the a couple sharks circling the cage but when we went into the water it was amazing!

Obligatory foot shot

After the shark adventure we hit Giovanni's Shrimp Truck for spicy shrimp. Then hit the open bar back at the hotel.

This dude could push out some rot gut!

Continuing on in Honolulu we toured the Pearl Harbor area. Interesting and humbling when visiting the Arizona Memorial.

After the tour we hit he pool and had more cocktails. Someone should have told me my pants were falling down
We got a late night burger and Poke from the ABC deli

The next day we flew to Maui on Hawaiian Airline. We hit the Plumeria lounge before the flight for snacks and some sparkling wine. The lounge is ok for a pit stop. Limited offerings. I wouldn't pay for access unless I had a really long layover.

These guys were "experts" in the cc game.

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency and had club access for breakfast and snacks during the day and reduced alcoholic drinks. It was nice to ride down the elevator and grab breakfast before heading to the beach and on the road. The hotel and grounds are in good shape.

We drove up to see the Banyan Tree and have lunch in Lahaina. We drove up to the Nakale Blowhole and saw the "heart rock"

We also made the drive on the road to Hana. We stopped and had macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup at Charlies. It was so good I bought one to go to snack on during the day.

The road scenery along the route is beautiful. We had a convertible mustang and liked being able to see the sights and smell the sea, flowers and trees. Lots of hairpin turns and one lane bridges.

They had a surfing competition near Paia.

We made a stop at the black sand beach at the Waianapanapa State Park. If you go, bring aqua socks or something to protect your feet. The "sand" is really small volcanic rocks. Looks really cool but not easy on your feet. The have several picnic tables and showers if you want to wash off the salt water.

There are many places to stop along the way to Hana. The drive takes time because of the one lane areas and bad drivers. If you stop at a couple spots it can easily take a day. We didn't go the whole way around and skipped the pools. When we got back to Paia it was bumper to bumper and took 45 minutes just to get through the town. We liked the fresh banana nut bread at the "halfway store". The people grilling foods on the roadside smelled good but we skipped that and packed a picnic lunch and ate at the park.

I can answer some questions if you have any. I will try to post more pics later.

Cool!

Sharks are terrifying, can't imagine being that close.

We snorkeled Molokini and with sea turtles in Maui and it was absolutely incredible. They don't tell you they look for sharks before they let us out.

The good thing about Molokini is it's an easy snorkel, water is calm as you are protected by the crater.

Swimming with the sea turtles in Maui is a little more strenuous because you actually swim along the shore where the turtles were hanging out.

Highly recommend.

Plus if right time of the year you can whale watch as well.

Great trip report. Only one highly disturbing photo. I have stayed at that Hyatt - it’s solid , I enjoyed the pool and the beach walk down to the restaurants and retail . They also have a great pool bar - I watched LSU in their last World Series championship run at that bar. If you go back, check out Kauai and The Grand Hyatt.

Hope you used the SQ transfer to book your UA flights! Saves 10K points per person on a RT for the exact same redemption.

I assume you approached the Nakelele Blowhole from the west side. The other side of it is supposed to be one of the most dangerous highways, I'm assuming you didn't go that way.

Yes. Like I said above, I learned a lot from you and the others that contribute in that thread. Thanks again for your contributions.

Also used the PP from CSR for lounge access.

We stayed in Kaanapali so didn't go the "back" way. While we were leaving and watching some guy chopping coconuts for the tourists one guy mentioned to me that they tried to come that way and had to turn around because there was something blocking the road. We got there Wednesday after the storm that knocked out power to much of the island. Glad we didn't experience that!

You don't really get hooked until you take your first trip

You are right. I still have 300k URs after the trip and I feel so poor! We are under 5/24 and are going 2 player mode now.

If only I could use points for babysitters when we go on these trips!
