I mean NY in the winter can be beautiful but it is fricking cold. Also, limits outdoor activities to ice skating.

So far it's been mild up in NY, you may luck out with weather. The city will be in the full christmas spirit (Rockefeller center, the tree, ice skating, etc) so I'd recommend it if you've never been. 40s is border line winter coat depending on the wind

I went for Christmas a few years ago and it was fricking 70 degrees.

Definitely. The stores are lit up for Christmas, see the Rockettes Christmas show, walk around Central Park. Our experience 2 years ago was everyone was over the top polite. We heard Merry Christmas a lot more than happy holidays

I love the city that time of year. So many holiday type things to do. Great time of year to visit.

I love New York in winter. Hell I like it in the cold rain. Bundle up and go walk around.

Cold is the Midwest during wintertime. New York is, actually, quite mild in comparison. Plenty OK to be outside.

It will be fine as long as you have a decent coat.
NYC at Christmas is fun. Everything everyone mentioned upthread, plus: hot roasted chestnuts to eat as you walk along 5th Avenue looking at the decorated Christmas windows, the Christmas market set up in Bryant Square Park behind the big public library, ice skating in Central Park...wonderful shopping, plus all the usual NYC stuff like Broadway shows, fantastic dining, etc.

this.... except all those polite people were visitors who left 1 year and 51 weeks ago. We went last year, did all the touristy things...and a few more things off the beaten track. it's overpacked in anything touristy. insanity. will never ever do it again. don't bother driving. want a real treat.... stay out in Brooklyn or somewhere other than manhattan and rely on the subway. every night was a new shakedown version. heh...
