Need some ideas for northeast destinations in the Fall

Looking for an interesting place to visit in the northeast during the fall to catch fall colors and leaves turning. We like to hike, and my wife likes small towns, bed/breakfasts/etc. Would be willing to make it a driving trip with multiple stops, or a single stop for a few nights if there is plenty to do.
Also, for an area, would like to know when a good time to visit would be to catch the best colors.

Plenty of interesting places, but unless you're looking at the first week of October, you'll miss peak foliage. Mid to late September is usually the best time to go.
NH has good hiking, but I much prefer VT. Look into Woodstock and Stowe.

We're planning the same. This is what I found
When To Come For 'Peak' Foliage: There is no one 'perfect' time to visit Vermont to see peak foliage. Color change begins in mid-September and runs through the first two to three weeks in October and varies by elevation, progressing from north to south and higher to lower elevations during the course of the season.

Fly into Burlington and then drive to the Adirondacks in NY. Check out Lake George, Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, and Saranac Lake.

Check out Hanover,NH/Norwich, VT. Hanover is a college town, home to Dartmouth, and Norwich has the King Arthur HQ and it’s baking school. Nearby is Quechee Gorge, and White River Junction. Nearby Enfield has the shaker village historic site. Southwest files into Manchester, NH, about 1.5 hrs away via easy interstate.

Lincoln New Hampshire area is nice. We were up there last week of September a couple years ago and was still about 2 weeks too early for peak foliage. This varies by a few weeks every year so no one can give you an answer to that question.
