Are any of these places suitable for living with kids. Schools etc.?

Obviously depends on what you're looking for. Generally, all of these places will probably be much colder in the winter than you're used to. Schools in NC are generally very good. Daughter went to Appalachian State for one year. Liked Boone, and the school, but the "Snowmageddon" did it.

I personally think Boone/Blowing Rock is great for year round living IF you can deal with the winters.

Lived in Boone for a few years. Also lived in Florida for 6. I don't think the snow was bad, but what bothered me is that it was always windy during the winter. As someone that likes to run and bike the windy winters were a pain. Great place though. I definitely wouldn't let the winters impact my decision to live there.
