Time of year? How long (2 days or 2 weeks in each state)? Activities you enjoy doing? Just you or a family?

Cape May, New Jersey is good stop. It bills itself as the Nations's Oldest Seaside Resort. Lot of Victorian era homes. Might want to book a room soon as I think weddings are common there in the fall.

But if a Myrtle Beach, SC vibe is more to your liking there is always Wildwood, NJ which is not that far from Cape May.

From Cape May you can take the ferry to Lewes, Delaware which is near Rehoboth Beach. You can take Hwy 1 to Maryland. Assateague Island is a barrier island that is in MD & VA and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is there. The CNWF is known for wild horses. But you cannot drive to VA on the island. You have get back on the mainland.

A couple of paddle boarders w/ their dogs at sunset in Sinepuxent Bay which is just south of Ocean City, MD. You could probably rent paddle boards or kayaks near there if that interest you.

Wildhorses in CNWF. This is on the south end of Assateague Isl., near the town of Chincoteague, VA. These horses are the only ones on the east coast not managed by the Federal Govt., IIRC. You can drive around the CNWF or there are some walking trails/paved paths you can take. There are also private water tours that will take you to more remote areas to see the horses.

From C'teague you can drive down the eastern shore to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel and into the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area. Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and Fort Monroe National Monument are all historical places of significance in that general area. If you go that route and are near Exmore, VA at lunch/dinner stop at the Great Machipongo Clam Shack for something to eat.

There are many other historical sites in VA but don't know if you're flying or driving and where you plan to be at the end of your 5 days.

I'd go the coastal route instead of inland for Jersey, should be quiet down by the shore. Wildwood as mentioned by nc has a boardwalk and similar to the myrtle environment. Cape May will be better for a couple, theres a few bed and breakfast type places that will likely suit your needs. Since it'll be fall, all the farms should have things like corn mazes, apple cider, etc.

If you want, you could stop in Atlantic City if you enjoy gambling. I haven't been there before so I've heard bad things, may just be a quick stop on your way down to Cape May. If you're into theme parks, Six Flags Great Adventure is in Jackson NJ not far from the beach. Maybe spend a half day there if you enjoy thrill rides?

Here's a link to the NJ events calendar, just apply your dates on the left hand side and it should filter what is going on when you're here. LINK

There's a train ride with a corn maze in Phillipsburg LINK
