My wife and I are visiting here in a few months. Any definitive things we must see/do on both islands?

We are renting a car and driving half the road to hana. We are actually going to tent in a campsite around hana the day of the drive. Other than that, we are planning on lots of beaches in maui.

For Kauai we are planning on hiking a lot. I've youtubed some hikes there, but people are fricking insane and hiking on the edge of deadly cliffs. We aren't THAT crazy, but we do like a challenge.

Any info?

Drive to Lahaina. Eat at the Lahaina Grill. We also did a catamaran type sunset cruise out of Lahaina and saw whales jumping and what not. Definitely recommend Lahaina for a day.

Braddah Hutts BBQ was the best bbq I had in maui.

Makena beach was my favorite of the beaches I visited on Maui.

Hike the Na Pali Coast, it's beautiful but a bit tough (we hiked to the waterfall). Also, definitely go check out Waimea Canyon, rent a Jeep or something because our shitty economy rental was having issues with some of the elevation change. I think you can also go down into the canyon if you have a Jeep.

Honoloa bay in Maui great for snorkeling. You park and walk a little to get there but well worth it. Some people enjoy biking down the volcano as well at sunrise. You are above the clouds and get to see the sun come up. Good ziplining several places as well.

Agree Lahaina is a good place to eat and drink.

I remember driving the 340 on the northwest side of Maui in a convertible Mustang. It was awesome! Just be alert and ready to pull let oncoming traffic pass when necessary.

There are some manageable hikes in Kauai. I was there about six weeks ago. Do the Heritage Trail at Shipwreck Beach - it's easy and runs along the coast with great views all the way. When you're done (out and back), hit the surf at Shipwreck Beach to cool off.

Spend an entire day on the North Side. Visit Ke'e beach and hike the Kalalau Trail, but only to Hanapaki Beach, which is less than 3 miles up the coast and relatively easy if you are in shape. If you want to extend the hike you can take a 2 mile spur trail to a waterfall from there. You need a permit to hike the full Kalalau Trail and you have to camp at the end since it's generally too long to do as a day hike. You also need to reserve parking at the start well in advance (they limit visitors) or otherwise book the park and ride shuttle. When your done hiking and exploring get a shaved ice at Jo Jo's in Hanelei.

Another great way to see the Na'Pali Coast is on one of the popular day cruises that leave from the south side. Captain Andy is the best reviewed but there are others and they offer a variety of boats and options (sunset dinner, snorkeling, etc.) Helicopter rides look awesome but they are pricey.

Waimea Canyon is a must visit. Drive all the way to the end of the road and there are places to park and walk around where you get great views without having to go on the scary hikes (and some of the hikes there are no joke - and outright carzy if it has been raining and the trails are muddy and slick). There are also some easier hikes in the Canyon.

One crashed while I was in Kauai last month.

Now Kobe dies in one.

Hard pass.

Yeeeeaaaahhhhhh. I'm not about to sign me and my wife up for a helicopter tour the day after Kobe dies in one. I think we'll have a good enough time without it.

Sunset at Polihale State Park beach. "Need" a Jeep to get out there and it's forbidden by most rental companies but easily the best sunset I've ever seen.

We went to Kauai in Sept this past year. Highly suggest you do the Captain Andy sunset cruise along the coast...it was awesome!!!

We did a couple of hikes, nothing real long. The best was to the Ho'Opii falls.
