I'm landing in Manchester 5 April to catch a Reds match at Anfield. I'll be in the vicinity for 7 days (5th freedom flight on Singapore from IAH to MAN).

I've been to Liverpool for a weekend or two before, and DGAF about the Beatles. Given the prices of hotels on match weekend, I may stay in Manchester, including on match day. It's less about cost, and more about what I already know about Liverpool city centre nightlife. I prefer hard rock/heavy metal, and Liverpool seems nearly devoid of that according to TripAdvisor.

I thought about taking bus/train to Wrexham for selfies. I'm tempted, very tempted, to get myself into serious trouble on the Brecon Beacons, but don't know if it's worth renting a car to pulverize myself in between pub visits. Any ideas? ETA: I'm going alone, it's the first trip I booked after the divorce was final.

You could take a train to York, which is a cool old city that is easy to explore on foot. Also within easy train/car distance is the Lake District National Park, North York Moors National Park, or Yorkshire Dales National Park. Scenery in those areas is outstanding. There is often a pub near a train stop, where you can kick back and have a few at an outdoor table.

Go see our boys in Leeds if you can.

Manchester is a cool place, decent amount to do. Way more than Liverpool, so its a good call to stay there.

Its a bit of a hike, but I really enjoyed Newcastle.

The Lake District is amazing and there are some good ol pubs there in little villages such as The Eagles Head in the village of Satterthwaite but you probably need a car to get to it. But the village is adjacent to Grizedale Forest which has hiking, mountainbiking and a hiking trail with sculpture artists made from things they found in the forest. Boggles Cragg is in the forest which me and some other LSU peolple hiked at midnight after drinking at the Eagles Head and had the bejesus scared out of us. We didnt know at the time but a Boggle is a ghost and it was definitely following us that night.
Wrexham is not worth going to. Its a shite town I spent a couple of days in working on a park design with the other english students in the Landscape Architecture department.
I went to school in Manchester many moons ago and lived in Chorlton-cum-hardy.....yes that's correct. It's about a 15 minute ride outside the city center and has some cool pubs like Horse&Jockey , Beech In and Trevor Arms which are within 150' of each other. The best was The Bridge Pub which is about a 20 minute walk through a big Country Park from Horse &Jockey and along the Mersey river. It sits along a canal with a big outdoor area and has live music and good food

That's where I saw a dude masturbating in a sleeping bag on the outside of the train station on the way to the office. Before 7AM.

I also was amazed by the amount of dudes with facial hair in dresses on the weekends.

Location wise, any of those first 3 would be good. You could walk to the Northern Quarter which is a big nightlife area. Salford Quays is in Salford and about a 20 minute drive from the city center. It's a cool area and worth a visit but I wouldn't stay out there.

I will say that the AC hotel (#3) was super convenient. It was close enough to Victoria Station, and the train smash area (on a bank holiday weekend, which I didn't quite get before I booked, hijinx ensued.) I could walk from a pub back to the hotel to do restroom things in five minutes.

I would stay there again, just make sure you're not in a room near someone under 30.
