Madrid is a severely underrated eating and drinking town. If you want really good food, stay away from anything that looks even remotely popular.....find a Tapas place, etc on any side street...you really cannot go wrong. Spanish wine is very good and hit up the Flamenco places late at night. I haven't been there in 8-9 yeas, but it was always good.

We were only there for a day and did a walking tour of the city. We enjoyed Madrid and look forward to returning.

Mercado San Miguel is a great place to get lunch. Dozens of food stalls and we rarely saw something repeated.

Tapas rule in Madrid. Enjoy!

I did a family walking tour, and a food and history tour. I think the company was Devour, and they did a great job. Great way to find good food off the beaten track.

I enjoyed going to different markets/food halls and getting sangria and trying different things. My favorite was the Mercado de San Miguel, though it may be a little touristy. The olive stand had some great things and most were only 1€.

ETA: I see someone else recommended it too.
