We spent 10 days on Maui a few weeks ago. I noticed that many of the locals didn’t act very kind towards tourists. You are constantly reminded of their culture on Maui and that we should not disrespect their culture.
Disrespecting their culture examples that were mentioned to us were:
1. Stopping at any beach considered a “locals” beach especially on the weekend.
2. Not pulling over on The Road to Hana to let locals pass.
3. Getting upset if an activity you were doing was behind schedule - meal, excursion or lesson.

i've been to hawaii a few times and i never felt like locals were unfriendly. maybe i wasn't being perceptive enough.

i haven't heard of any of these things, but 1 is a joke that i wouldn't even consider observing.
2, no big deal. i pulled over for faster-moving tourists on the road to hana. if i was going slower, i was happy to pull over for any traffic behind me, local or not.
and 3, well, you are on island time. things moved slower there. there isn't a sense of urgency. once you get that, it's not so bad.
