Thinking about planning to do this in late May with the wife and 2 kids (8 & 6). Would like to leave Central La Friday afternoon and stay around Dallas that night. What would be some of the must see things in route? Cave Tours in Carlsbad? Petrified Forrest? Anything Area 51 related?
How about any recommendations for lodging near the Grand Canyon? Thinking we'd get to the GC sometime on Tuesday and stay 3 nights.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I would let the kids sleep that evening and you and your wife swap driving duties and put a dent in that drive the first day

We enjoyed Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon near Page, AZ every bit as much as the Grand Canyon.

Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend are in the same area.
Horseshoe Bend
Best to photograph early or late in the day.

Antelope Canyon is still closed due to COVID (Navajo nation has been hit really hard) and they are not sure when it will reopen so keep checking back. Site says maybe sometime late spring or summer
You can only see Antelope Canyon with a tour company since it is property of Navajo Nation

The Wave, White Tank, Vermilion Cliffs, Monument Valley are all worth a look if they're open.

If it were me, I’d drive all the way to Amarillo this first leg. Stay two nights. Get up and go visit the Cadillac Ranch (bring paint for the kids) then go check out Palo Duro canyon (the second largest canyon in the US). Make a hike on the lighthouse trail. It’s easy-moderate. I hiked it with a two year old strapped to my back.
We saw all kinds of small wildlife. Tarantulas, lizards, tarantulas, scorpions, squirrels, tarantulas, etc.

Something offbeat to check out, right on the side of I-40, is the Apache Death Cave. If it interests you read up on the history which may be completely fabricated by 1 man but makes it more fun. You'll get a little dirty but it's a safe, shallow cave with no crowd. It's between Winslow and Winona

We also enjoyed hiking down into Walnut Canyon and especially hiking the lava flows at Sunset Crater, both near Flagstaff.
All 3 above can be done in 1 staging day before the final drive to the South Rim.
A sunset in the Painted Desert is not overrated. Meteor Crater and Petrified Forest are, imo.

Did that drive (similar) a while back, here are a few things:
Lucky Palace in Shreveport for a meal en-route.
Cadillac Ranch is just west of Amarillo, sneaks up on you, no signs or nothing.
Herd Ware between Clarendon and Amarillo is an interesting shop, a nice break in a long drive.
And that's it, a long drive. Bring music or books on tape.

Carlsbad will take a while to tour, but worth it. Guadalupe NP is attached and worth looking at too. Area 51 (Roswell) has a fun little town and cheesy alien museum, but not much else to see when I was there in 2010.
