Got about 2 weeks to work with, want to see as much as possible. Love to walk.
Typical millennial here who wants to dive into all the nostalgia of the 90's Pokemon and Godzilla.
Any suggestions?

Start here.

Since you're into toys and geek stuff, Akihabara is a must stop. Go during the day to hit the 7? story toy store with one floor for Gundam, another floor for some other shite I've never heard of, etc. Make sure you're there after dusk to see the lights. There are also a ton of lights in Ginza and elsewhere, but Akihabara is toy/electronics/gaming sort of focused, so it's a different kind of seizure that will be induced.

With two weeks, get out of Tokyo.

I didn't go see the Godzilla head, but it sounds like it'll be up your alley.

Was there last April at the peak-to-tail end of Sakura (cherry blossom) season.

It was the trip of a lifetime.

I would recommend (generally speaking):

- Tokyo: 4-5 days
- Kansai region (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara): 4-5 days

And then either:

- somewhere more in the Japanese nature e.g. Hakone or Nikka (2-3 days)
- Hiroshima + Miyajima island (2 days)
Edit: Nikko* not Nikka, I was thinking only of Japanese whisky haha

With some hustling you might even be able to fit it all in, but for sure Kansai region and Tokyo require a solid 3-4 days minimum each.

Go to Mount Fuji and climb if it’s accessible. (Snow)
That area is fantastic and beautiful.
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is pretty cool. It’s on the coast.
Go to many of the gardens and temples and enjoy the serenity and beauty of those.
The country side by train is very nice and surprisingly rural
Yokohama has a cool suspension bridge that is lit up at night.
The train system and bus system are very good.
The Tsukiji fish market is a lot of fun. Get up very early and see the Tuna auctions.

Edited to add the Royal Palace Grounds.

Enjoy! The people are very nice.

Don't be scared. There were salarymen climbing it in suits and dress shoes (no snow.) You also don't have to climb the whole thing, you can start at station 5, end at station 7, etc. There are cool little stations where you can get your walking stick branded with a unique (to the station) brand. And you will need the walking stick, to get down. Going down was more effort than going up.

You can’t do it all. Favorite part of our trip was excursion to seto inland sea. Took about 5 days. Some sights to see along the way.

Take Shinkansen train to onomichi,
get lost in the maze of alleys for a day, rent a bike and bike the shimanami kaido to imabari over the course of a couple days,
take a bus from imabari to matsuyama, sit naked with a bunch of dudes in the dogo onsen,
take the jet ferry back to Hiroshima.
Train back to Tokyo.

Seto islands are on the to-do list for future visits. Misuss’s dad hails from Imabari so we caught glimpses of the area on the bus ride from Fukuyama to Imabari.

I hit Hiroshima, then Shinkansen to Kagoshima then ferry to Yakushima Island

Recommend

Plus: the airport code for Yakushima’s airstrip is KUM

So that goes with CLT, CUN, and PNS

I love Japan

Outside of Tokyo, Kyoto is a must. Osaka, Nara, and Nikko Park are great. Hakone/Mt Fuji are great choices too depending on how much nature stuff you want.

I’m probably in the minority but of all the things we did miyajima was just OK. Very touristy. Felt a little like Japanese Branson.

Granted the Japanese version of anything is much much better so wouldn’t equivocally say stay away.

I mostly agree, in comparison with the rave reviews I saw online (many travelers referring to it as the highlight of their trip) I found it enjoyable but underwhelming, Hiroshima city was better than expected though I have to say. Wish I’d had more time.

For me, some highlights were:

- Kyoto general sights and being their at the height of Sakura season (especially the Kiyomizudera temple)
- Nara see above (especially the Kasuga Taisha temple)
- Imabari Castle, one of the few Japanese imperial palaces moated by seawater, and with low crowds and peak sakura bloom it was lovely.
- Yawatahama sleeply fishing/port town on Western Shikoku, + the ferry we took from here to Kyushu
- Exploring the Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu, hiking the Kaeda Valley, bathing in the mountain streams, stumbling upon an artisanal Japanese pottery kiln and studio and then hitchhiking with a friendly Japanese family to Aoshima island when we couldn’t get a cab to the trailhead of Kaeda Valley.
- Shopping in Tokyo
- Hiking in Hakone, catching a rare glimpse of Fuji-san and going to a true Onsen there.
