A friend heard the call for boarding for her flight to Europe and popped her Ambien. A few minutes later, they announced a delay. She had to slap the shite out of herself for about two hours to stay awake and board the delayed flight. I always think of it like a Tim Conway skit.

Another friend flew with us from DFW to London and waited until after dinner to have her Ambien. Too late. She was still a zombie when we landed. She has no memory of getting off the plane or the 30 minute train ride into town. If we had not been there, lawd knows what would have happened to her.

Timing is important,

I generally can’t sleep because of leg stiffness . Alcohol makes me jittery . Benadryl has been semi- effective but hit or miss . I just feel really grateful if I can get even a half hour on long flights . Usually I just arrive, go through customs, power through the first day and sleep early and long that night. I envy everyone who can sleep on planes and the few times I’ve done it has been great.

I snore like a hog lately so I don't even want to fall asleep on my plane ride to Germany this summer because it would be rude to everyone else on the plane. I will have off all summer being a teacher (downvotes commence) so I think I will just stay up really late the week before and sleep in really late so that I am able to stay awake on the flight and just make it through the first day we are in Germany. Then I will just go to bed early and crash hard and get up the next morning feeling great.

I pop a couple of Tylenol PM after the meal. Works just fine for me.

Call your doctor and tell them you are going on a long flight and are nervous. They will give you a prescription for 2 xanax (one for each way). A must when flying to Europe.
