Taking a trip to Kona next year. Trying to decide if we should stay in one of the resorts up north of the airport or rent an oceanfront Airbnb closer to Kona town. There is so much to do on the big island that I don’t feel like we will spend a lot of time at a resort, so a lot of the amenities might be wasted. But, it would be nice to have them when we aren’t out and about on the island.

Another factor, the Airbnb‘s are about half the price of a resort. Splurging for first class flights so that would be a nice break.

Going in February. We are staying in condo. Found it on either Airbnb or Vrbo. Did some homework and contacted owner directly. Saved us the fee. The island is so big. If you are like us you will be going the whole trip. I don’t think a week is going to be enough for us to do everything. If you want to just hang out at a resort I wouldn’t recommend going to the Big Island, unless you are staying at the Four Seasons

Yep you’re right. Think we’ve found a good Airbnb in Kona on the water and it’s very reasonable.

And yes, I’d be happy not leaving that Four Seasons but the prices are insane.

You’re also right about the island. So much to do and everything is so spread out. Love it.

If you're going to be on the island for more than four days, I would split my time and get an Airbnb in the town of Volcano for two or three nights. The national park is awesome, but the 2-hour drive to and from Kona is long.

I like the Big Island but just know that the beaches there aren't as big or as nice as the other islands. It takes a lot of geological time for beaches to form and the Big Island is the youngest of the group. Hawaii sits over a volcanic hot spot and as the tectonic plate moves over it the lava forms a spout of land mass. This means the Big Island has a great volcano and lots of black rock / black sand scenery but the lush landscapes and big sandy beaches haven't had enough time to develop like they have on the western islands.
