A buddy of mine just expressed some interest in next year's Ryder Cup which is in September in Kohler, WI. This was like 5 minutes ago so definitely nothing set in stone, and I haven't metnioned it to my wife so odds are it won't happen anyway. But let's pretend it does happen, anyone have any advice? Looking at a map it looks like my best course of action would be to fly into Milwaukee and rent a car to make the hour drive up to Kohler. We would probably go to the tourney on Friday, so I imagine probably fly up early Thursday morning and come back maybe Sunday morning. I'd never even heard of Kohler until today so know nothing about its size, appeal, or anythign about it. If anyone could shed some intial light on things to do or places to stay (or avoid) that'd be awesome. Or..maybe even if we should not stay in Kohler at all and stay in milwaukee and just drive to and from the tourney Friday, maybe some recs for milwaukee instead? I know nothing.

I've got a shot at tickets and was just thinking the same thing. I think we are going to stay in Milwaukee and just head up there for the golf.

First and foremost, Whistling Straits is gorgeous and right on Lake Michigan. Pleasant time of year in Wisconsin and there are a few nice courses throughout the Sheboygan area. Don't think you'd have much issue staying there - plenty of bars and restaurants in the hometown of Sam Dekker ( ), including 3 Sheeps, which is a popular brewery in Wisconsin. They make solid beer.

However, nothing wrong with driving between Milwaukee and Whistling Straits. It's easy and Milwaukee, specifically, has undergone heavy revitalization - great place to visit. Like Sheboygan, it's on Lake Michigan and the Milwaukee River runs through downtown. Plenty of good bars/breweries throughout the city, including Eagle Park (making some of the best IPAs in the Midwest right now). Lower East Side and Third Ward are my two favorite neighborhoods.

The ticket deal was crazy this morning. I got a code that I could buy tickets and I had to wait in a virtual line starting at 9 a.m. C.S.T. I was online for over 2.5 hours before I could actually select tickets. When it came time to select, the match days were sold out and the only tickets left were to the practice rounds. I passed on those. Driving back and forth from Milwaukee will be crazy due to the traffic each day. The roads to and from the interstate to the golf course are 2 lane rural road.
Whistling Straits is a fun course to play, but will be a difficult course for spectators to watch and get around because all of the "natural rough" areas. It is a beautiful place and the weather should be good, but it will be a difficult Ryder Cup site. Good luck if you get tickets.

I've only been to Kohler once and it was two years ago to visit the factory for work, but as far as I remember, the town itself was basically a company town with little to do outside of the company properties. It's a "suburb" of Sheboygan, and the course is on the north side of Sheboygan. Sheboygan didn't look to have much to offer outside of a small beach and corn fields. If it were me, I'd stay in Milwaukee and drive up for the day. It's an easy drive, albeit a bit bumpy.

Whistling Straights is a beautiful place. Kohler owns it and as part of the schmoozing they took us to play a round there. I play golf maybe a couple times a year, so I felt a little silly playing such an awesome course that was way above my skills. I still had fun and appreciated being there. I tried not to tear it up too badly.

I would probably stay in Milwaukee and hire someone to drive me back and forth. Kohler and Sheboygan have limited lodging options and obviously the prices will be jacked up (they will be jacked up in MKE too).
