I am going to Kenya later this month and received a Yellow Fever vaccination today. They also told me they recommend getting tablets for Malaria that run about $8.00 each. I would have to take several and the amount would run to about $150.00 if I bought all that they suggested. They also said I could buy the tablets at virtually any pharmacy.

I told them I would decline today and look into it on my own before making a decision. Have any of you who have been to Africa taken anything to combat Malaria?

First off , you’re lucky you were able to find a yellow fever vaccine as that’s been on major back order

Secondly, I’d imagine they’re recommending Doxycycline or maybe one other alternative, can’t remember it .

It can tear your stomach up so beware of that... oh also.. it increases skin sensitivity , but better safe than sorry

I took Doxy when I went to Zimbabwe/SA/Botswana and had no issues that I recall

I've taken malaria pills for India and South Africa.

I had no problem with it because I do not recall them being nearly that expensive.

My wife is terrible with that kind of thing and stopped taking them during both trips. No side effects she's just lazy.

I went in 2007 with a church and took malarone the entire time.

Don’t remember it being expensive though. What was expensive was all the travel vaccines (I wasn’t taking any chances....I got everything recommended on top of the mandated yellow fever vaccine to enter the country)

I had some minor side effects but nothing major (it gives you REALLY weird dreams).

Wasn’t taking any chances though....someone that went the previous year with that church got malaria and was really, really sick from it.

Eta: we also were very vigilant in using our mosquito nets the entire trip. We were also instructed to not bring anything scented. So I brought unscented stuff (shampoo, body wash, deodorant, lotion, etc).

We also stayed inside at night as much as possible when the mosquitoes that carry malaria are usually out.

Doxycycline is cheap and easy. It has no major interactions and side effects are rare.

Dermatologists prescribe it for years to combat acne.

Malarone is another option. It’s a combination drug and it’s well tolerated.

If you are travelling to an area with drug resistant strains. I would look at Arakoda/Krintafel. It’s the newest anti malarial on the market and it has a very long half life, 14 days.

Doxy and Malarone should be $10 or $20 with insurance. Arakoda and Krintafel would be more expensive. But not more than $100.

I'm flying into Nairobi and will be there for a day before heading to Amboseli National Park. After a few days there I will come back to Nairobi and then go to Mombasa. After a couple of days there I will fly back to Nairobi and then home.

Lucky you found a yellow fever vaccine. When I needed one everywhere I called was $300+ for the vaccine.

You’ve already spent that much, spend some more for the malaria pills.

I went to SA, Zambia, Zimbabwe and was glad I had the pills. The mosquitoes were bad. Especially at night.

Edit: are you flying Kenya airways?

My daughter went to Kenya in 2012 and Tanzania in 2014. She took Malarone both times. I also don't remember it being expensive. I know a couple of people who have gotten malaria on trips and ended up hospitalized. No way I'd risk it. It's a serious disease.
