Wife and I are heading to Kauai next month. Looking for recommendations for outdoor adventures. We are both fit and enjoy hiking, backpacking, biking, kayaking, fly fishing, among others. I’m not interested in charter fishing in Hawaii due to fish keeping policies (boat keeps fish).

I went a few years ago in early February and it was very rainy.

Had helicopter tour postponed a few times bc of weather but would highly recommend - worth the $$$

Hiking is amazing but can be iffy/dangerous if very wet

Water was very very rough - wife was pregnant so wasn't allowed on boats for whale watching etc and I'm glad we didn't do that bc it was pretty intense

Basically what this guy said.

South and Waimea/west will be drier. North side of island will be very wet. Ocean is a no go. Showers that did happen on South side for me tended to be very brief and then full comfortable sun after.

Still had great time.

Probably pull up All Trails and Google around for trails. The top 10 or so are pretty agreed upon and range in difficulty. Then you may want to look at ones close to your hotel. There's a ton.

I second the helicopter tour. It was spectacular.

Some kids and adults died in a tour helicopter crash when we were on Kauai in 2019. Reinforced my aversion. Then Kobe crashed and cemented it.

A zodiac boat tour of the Na Pali Coast is life-changing. We did it in 2012, and doing it again in June. Link to Captain Andy’s below:

If you want to do an overnight trip, the Kalalau Trail has to be one of the greatest hikes in the world. I would recommend camping at least 3 nights

We did that once. The ocean was rough and for the next two days it felt like someone had beat me with a baseball bat lol. Did the catamaran one a couple of years before that. Definitely much smoother but do not get up close and in the caverns.

We have been to Kauai several times and always stayed on the North Shore but it was always summer. Some of the things we did included going to Waimea Canyon. I think this is the 2nd largest canyon in the Western Hemisphere.

We had teenage kids at the time so they enjoyed the zip line we did as well as “tubing the ditch”. Tubing the ditch is basically a 3 hour lazy river through an old sugar plantation.

We also did an ATV tour of Kipu Ranch. We went to Queens Bath but the ocean is probably too dangerous to do in winter.

Plenty of waterfalls/related hikes and tours. The drive through the tree tunnel road is pretty cool.

Napali Coast tour of some kind IS A MUST!

This link has a lot of the things we enjoyed doing. Tours book up fast. We actually bought a trip book which I don’t normally do but it was worth it. I will try to find the name of the book but it was good.
