Looking for recommendations for a 1 week stay in mid October of this year.

We’re leaning towards JH but have read that places start to close mid-late October.

Thoughts?

What are you looking to do? Jackson Hole is still a blast and plenty to do for 7 days even when stuff is shut down. If it’s a once a lifetime trip I always just caution people to see what’s open.

Check the park schedules, the Jenny lake ferry may be closing around then. You can still hike the lake but it’ll add 4-5 miles to an otherwise easy hike for instance.

If you want to see wildlife and fall colors and great weather, October is a fantastic time of year in Wyoming.

We are looking to do a lot of sightseeing while we are there. We’ll have a car that week so are planning on just exploring the area including Yellowstone.

We’re planning on hiking some trails but we aren’t looking for anything crazy. We’re noobs when it comes to hiking so we’re looking for nice easy trails to hike during the week.

My only concern was that places start to shut down that time of year. I just wanted to make sure there’s still things to do for a week before pulling the trigger.

I could easily spend that much time there, regardless of what's closed. So much to see in the Park and Yellowstone. My only concern would be weather at that time. Looks like it's already snowing up there, but could change drastically.

Do you have any recommendations for trails in the Yellowstone/Grand Teton area for novice hikers?

I preliminary plan is to spend 2-3 days hiking different trails in the area. A couple more days driving our Yellowstone then spending time in the JH area

The inspiration point hike was great and not bad. Had my 6yo son, so could only do so much. It was a little tough for him, but the scenery kept him going. You can also walk all the way around Jenny Lake. It's beautiful, but likely lots of people.

This is really easy. I’ve walked it in the summer. It’s basically flat, but not sure what it would be like if it’s snowy. Snake River Dike Hiking Trail. https://www.hikingproject.com/trail/7068842/snake-river-dike-emilys-pond-levee-trail

There are certainly fewer activities in October, but in a normal year, all the restaurants should still be open. It’s a judgement call.

There will be snow at higher altitude.

I would speak with a hotel concierge to get an update. They can tell if it make sense or not.

What is your budget?

They’re a number of good hotels, ranging from Mountain Modern on the low end, to Caldera House, Amangani, and the Four Seasons on the high end.

Most of the trails are very accessible. Phelps Lake is a good example.

For what it is worth, I stayed at Mountain Modern the last night of my trip a couple years ago (I stayed an extra night) and I was surprised by how nice it was for the price. I have paid a lot more, and received a lot less, at other hotels. Also, they have complementary breakfast sandwiches, which is awesome. I paid under $100 for the night, and really enjoyed it.

It’s part of a mini empire run by the old Four Seasons GM, they also own and manage the Spring Hill Suites property in town. I was also really impressed.

We’re looking to spend around $200/night on a hotel if that helps narrow things down.

We’ve been looking at the Rustic Inn, Wort Hotel, and the Inn on the Creek.

Check out Ranch Inn. It is the best location of any hotel in Jackson and pretty cheap. It is a great place for the money.

Just got back yesterday from an 8 day trip to Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, Badlands, Mount Rushmore and Custer Park. Taggart Lake in JH was absolutely incredible. Literally experienced all 4 seasons throughout the week. 1 day we were in shorts and tshirts, next day it was snowing lol. But the video I made of the entire trip was epic. Will post the link if you want.
