Heading to MX for a week in February and our plan is to spend 4 days at a resort in Mayakoba.

For the rest of the trip, we want to keep sitting on a beach doing nothing, but get off the resort and have a town to eat/drink in. I want to do 3 days in Holbox.

Does anyone have recommendations on where to stay, things to do? Two hotels I was interested in booking burned down earlier this week . Things look nice on instagram, but am slightly concerned about how raw the island might be, so want some input.

Would consider Isla Mujeres, but it seems super crowded and more family oriented.

HGG may jump in. I believe Las Nubes is supposed to be great.

What hotels burned down? Sad to hear. Holbox is great and I'd go again in a minute. That said I will say that sargassum can be bad and it is not a deep beach. However, the staff at the hotels work hard to make their beaches as clean as possible.

A lot of the island is a sanctuary so you can't just go wherever you want to go.

Casa Las Tortugas and Hotel Mawimbi were completely destroyed from what I've seen.

Damn we stayed at Mawimbi and was about to recommend that.

It’s a long boat ride but we swam with the humpback whales and went to the flamingo sanctuary. Other than that the town is walkable. Plenty of good places around the main square to eat.

Not an option in February.

So if you are looking to avoid the annual Sargassum invasion, Holbox is off the table?

Yeah is this the case? Looked at google reviews of the island/beach (lol) and right around Feb people said it was bad.

Can it be avoided at Isla Mujeres? Or at least cleaned up better? Is the water also ruined even if the beach is clean?

On Monday night, a fire spread after a stationary gas tank exploded in the vicinity of the tourist facilities of Hobolx, Quintana Roo. The fire spread through several wooden pits and consumed at least 60 hotel rooms.

That's why, at first, the inhabitants had to use buckets of water to help control the flames. Subsequently, there was support from Civil Protection and Firefighters from the city of Cancun, as well as Playa del Carmen. Damage was reported in at least two hotels, Mawimbi and Las Tortugas, as well as one restaurant.
