Spin off from my Italy trip. I am planning two train trips from Rome to Florence and Florence to Venice. I want to maybe do one more day excursion via train. A 3-day pass is $299 for the two of us.

How much are train tickets at the station?

Generally speaking, the passes aren't worth it for short stays unless you'r'e traveling seriously long distances. The Trenitalia website has an English version, 1 ticket from Roma Termini to Florence Santa Maria Novella is about 20 euros one way. You can buy the ticket from a machine (in English) using cash. Easy peasy.

Here's the TrenItalia website in English--put in your dates & routes and you'll see the fares. LINK.

You were seeking itinerary advice: 3 days is too long in Venice, Milan isn't worth a look on your first trip to Italy, and you need a smaller town/countryside to balance out those urban areas. Or consider staying in Fiesole (outside Florence) for part of your Florence leg of the trip. I'd add time in Rome, but art & Roman history fascinate me. The train ride from Rome to Florence offers a few opportunities for side trips to smaller places, and Tuscany is quite lovely.

In my experience, passes are for flexibility, not savings.

When are you going? Booking ahead, those 4 tickets (if I'm reading that right) are what, 150 bucks? Do you need flexibility or can you plan ahead and commit to a timetable? Buying at the station will be more expensive, but for relatively short/frequent routes like those, you can probably still beat 299.

I'm booking like 4 train legs right now (8 tickets) for several countries over longer distances than you, and total, including some first and business class, we won't spend 300 bucks.

But we also have no hesitation to pick and stick with specific times and plan around them.

Not usually, but it depends. Seat61 is my go to train info resource. He covers pretty much everything including passes.

They are almost never a good deal. Only time is if you are a true backpacker and traveling constantly, some of the longer term ones are better also. For your trip from Rome to Venice just go online and price out the tickets for one for your trips.

Not worth it.

And to piggyback, 3 days in Venice is one day too long. Maybe even two days long. Unless you like the Disney atmosphere of tourist towns like Gatlinburg/Williamsburg/French Quarter

3 in Rome is better if you like museums/food/nightlife (nightlife there needs its own thread)

And 3 in Florence too
