Impulsively booked a flight to Iceland over the weekend. Help me fill in blanks

We are going in mid November. The goal is to see the northern lights. I know that it is kinda early in the season for that, but it's a craps shot anyway.
We are going to be there for 6 nights. Flying in and out of KEF.
I figure we will be renting a car for the week so basically the whole island is fair game. We are traveling with our (will be) 15 month old.
The only thing we have heard to do so far is the Blue Lagoon and that the food sucks.
We have no place to stay so far and the itinerary is a blank Excel sheet.
All recommendations are welcome!

You need to go in with the mindset that if you don't see them, it's ok. I was there in February and didn't get lucky enough to see them, but it was still a great trip. Just gives me an excuse to go somewhere else one day to try and catch them.

Even if you know how to drive stick, pay the extra money and get an automatic. It can be incredibly windy and if there's ice on the roads, you'll be glad you have it. I think upgrading to an automatic cost me something like $35 for the entire trip (4 days).

In all likelihood, your flight will land early in the morning when it's still dark out. I recommend going to the Blue Lagoon straight from the airport, and spend the morning there. It's cool to see it at night, as the sun rises, and during the day. It's also much emptier first thing in the morning.
The restaurant there is called Lava and it's actually pretty good, but very expensive. That will be a theme of the entire trip, so get used to it. Things are expensive there.
We stayed in Selfoss, Vik, and Reykjavik. I'd recommend doing a glacier hike, though with a 15 month old that might be out of the question. Since you'll have a car, drive the Golden Circle rather than take a tour.
Publick House and The Fish Market were two really great meals we had in Reykjavik, and you also have to get a hot dog for lunch one day at that stand downtown.

Do you have any hikes that you did that would be doable with a baby in a carrier?
He is big enough to ride like a heavy backpack, so anything other than a "strenuous" rating should be fine.

The hike should be fine then.
But full disclosure, we were scheduled to do a hike and a winter storm came through and they canceled it on us, so maybe someone else here who was able to do the hike (or has kids, for that matter) can chime in.

How much do you remember paying for a rental car. A quick look is showing $550 for 6 days for an automatic RAV4. Is that comprable to what you paid or should I look around more.

That's not too far off, but maybe a bit high. We paid $480 for 5 days.
Look at Blue Car Rental. That's who we went through and they were great to work with.

Exactly one month from today, I'll be in Iceland.
Not renting a car and traveling solo.
I've got a Game of Thrones filming tour and a Golden Circle tour along with a Southern Iceland Glacier/waterfall tour booked on 3 separate days
I hope to do my own first trip recap when I get back.
I am so damn excited, as this is my birthday present to myself.

So I went with my wife last year over Thanksgiving while she was 6 months pregnant. We rented a car from Sixt and paid about $350 for 5 days. Reserved a full-size car and got a free upgrade to a midsize SUV. I’d recommend renting a WiFi hotspot from them as it allowed us to use our phones normally while connected to it the whole trip.
I have attached a map off where we went for our time there. I’d recommend renting some krampons (spikes to add to your shoes when hiking) as it will make hikes a millions times easier in the snow/ice. Without them, we were sliding all over the place on some hikes.
We stayed in random Airbnb’s and booking.com rentals throughout. Some are Hostel-ish, but more along the lines of homes people converted to keep up with the tourism boom.
We got lucky and saw the northern lights close to Hof one night, but it’s all just luck. There’s a website (just google Iceland northern lights forecast) that lets you know probability of seeing them over 48 hours.
Food is overall expensive, expect to pay about $75 for dinner for the 3 of you each night at a minimum. I’d recommend eating lunches at their gas station restaurants as they’re all over and serve decent food.
You don’t need to get any cash at all, everywhere took credit cards so that was nice.
It’ll be difficult to go north as roads aren’t always passable, but the southern coastal roads should be pretty good. Only once was a road closed on us and thankfully it didn’t hinder our trip.
I have attached a hand drawn map of where we went and stayed while we were there.

I’m actually flying out next Saturday morning the 28th for Iceland. It will be 4 of us, we rented a 4x4 Kia I think. One of the guys planned and booked most everything, I don’t know a whole lot about where we are staying except random Airbnb’s around the ring road. I’m really looking forward to it.

Did you book it thru Wow, the Iceland airline company?
They start leaving st.louis in a few months i believe. Trying to talk the wife into a trip for northern lights, then maybe a flight to Germany.
