Hey er’body, currently we are back down at Lobouche. We got to base camp sometime after noon local time where we established camp near the famous Base Camp rock,,,,it was very cold. We ate some fried rice prepared by our Sherpa team, who we could not have done this trip without them. After that we trekked into the Kumbu Ice Fall where there are glaciers the size of many buildings in Lft/BR/NOLA,,,,giants,,,,,there are rivers that run through the ice fall,,,,later around 5pm we witnessed our first avalanche,,,,it’s kinda like throwing a hand grenade,,,unless you’ve done it you cannot imagine it,,,,,then the snow started, and it didn’t end until daybreak. We waited patiently for the crowds to exit the famous Everest Base Camp rock so we could take the obligatory pictures. We waited for them to leave because our trekking group is the only one with permits to sleep at Base Camp, these were day hikers and had to leave around 3pm to get back to Gorak Shep. We ate Dal Bhat prepared by the Sherpas and turned in for the night fairly early. In the middle of the night, we heard another huge avalanche,,,this time the ground shook and we felt the wind shake the tents,,,,it was way close,,,,upon waking up it was noted to be right behind our camp. We descended back down to GorakShep for breakfast and now in Lobouche for lunch, heading to Periche’ for supper and an overnight. I’ll send another update in the next couple days

Congratulations my friend. Thanks for the update. I noted your downward trek but didn’t want to update the board because I did not know the reason.
17,229 ft per the tracker is more than impressive.
A feat only accomplished by a a very small group of very dedicated people.
Surprised you didn’t figure out a Coonass solution on how to stop an avalanche.
Stay safe!

Yeah it was pretty sporty! After all was said and done, I was like, “there’s been about 10/12 things I thought of that could kill me in everyday life,,,,avalanche never crossed my mind” “Here lies a commas who lives at sea level, died of massive avalanche”,,,,crazy stuff! I will admit, I didn’t have my backpack & tracker when we scaled the icefall, I think we went up another 300-400ft, and even taking Diamox I had a touch of altitude sickness that didn’t subside till I hit about 14,500ft,,,,that was tough but I slept great last night and fell great!

What a great experience. A question if you don't mind.

How did the altitude at base camp affect your eating and sleeping?

Honestly, didn’t affect me, I ate to fuel myself, not out of hunger which I can say I was never hungry above 14,500ft,,,,,I was tired but I was able to catch a catnap after lunch, 20 minutes. Now at night it’s a lot different at night. So I came prepared, I brought ambien and trazadone,,,,I was able to get 3-4hrs max and then had to urinate due to the Diamox altitude medication which is a diuretic,,,,so I’d go hit the head, then remediate and was out in 30 mins for another 3-4 hrs. Those that didn’t did not sleep much after 14,000 feet and they suffered. Sleep is as important as good nutrition and 5-6 liters water a day,,,,there is no substitute for that combination,,,OG and being well trained before the climb.

Congrats!! Hope we get to see some pics when you get a chance!

Do you mind me asking what outfitter you used? How far in advance did you book your trip?

Sure thing, I will post pics once I get back to the States,,,,I used Ian Taylor Trekking,,,,couple reasons,,,,,his team offered extra acclimatization days on the trip so it’s about 3 days longer which also makes it more expensive BUT you get what you pay for,,,,outstanding service from Ian and his wife Laura, they even came meet me in Vail while I was climbing Mt Elbert,,,,and once you arrive in Kathmandu you get VIP treatment, they know the ins and outs of converting USD so you don’t get screwed, they handle things you can’t even imagine,,,,,the sherpas on the mountain are beyond helpful,,,,while crossing a bridge, one of our team had his sunglasses blown off his head into the canyon, one of the sherpas hauled arse downhill and recovered them without the person asking,,,,they wake you every morning, get you tea at every stop, serve you your food, make arrangements for special things along the trail, they know everyone and can get you just about everything you would need or want, and one of our did the haggling because the locals will try to scam you for a few extra rupees,,,,I booked a year out but there are spots available about 90 days out, but I would recommend no later than 6 months,,,,Ian provides really good training coaching and recommends training start no less than 4-5 months out.

Congratulations. What an awesome adventure. I've hiked to the top of Pikes Peak (14,110 feet) a couple of times many years ago. It's not something you do on the spur of the moment.

I drove up to the top of Pikes Peak a couple of times before actually making it to the top. I also hiked up halfway a couple of times before making it to the summit.

Boston911 is alive and well. Promised to post pics soon. He has been swamped at work after being out the country for so long and minor medical issues since his return. Not to mention he is traveling out of state for his work.

I have made him aware of the uproar on this board and the calls for his beheading for failure to post the promised pictures.
