Here is a very helpful subway guide for rookies that I used. He keeps it updated.

I bought a 7-Day Unlimited Ride card that works on trains and buses. Used Citymapper app (Google maps works well too) to tell me the best combo of travel means to use to reach a location. Went all over the place with minimum wasted time futzing with fares or directions.
