Just book via Marriott/Hilton/etc. and cancel within the window.

Don’t be such a pessimist.

Do it 11 months ago. Most hotel reservations are refundable. After you get back go ahead and book for next year

I'm a Hilton guy and just looked on their app - Looks like their cancel window is 30 days in Omaha. Not terribly surprising with such a big event. That was only one search, but I'm guessing a refundable hotel will be hard to come by this close.

Sometimes the 3rd party websites like Hotels.com, Booking.com or Expedia will have rooms that can be cancelled when the hotel website or reservations won’t offer that. I will book on 3rd party sites if that’s the case.
