For someone looking to get into doing some solo traveling, what are some good places to go within 6 hours of Baton Rouge? Given that I have a weekday job, I'm looking to just do some weekend trips here and there to get out and get comfortable with traveling alone.
For urban traveling, you could go to Memphis or Birmingham or Austin and check out some good BBQ restaurants and landmarks and stuff.
For outdoorsing, you could go to Arkansas.
Those might be more than 6 hours. There's not a ton within 6 hours from BR.

Damn you're lucky, I'm the same age but don't have a job like that
Actually decided to take advantage of studying abroad next year in New Zealand will probably check out Australia while I'm down there

- 6 Hours is just a ballpark time frame. I've gone to Austin over a weekend before and the drive wasn't too bad, but my g/f at the time was with me so that made it easier.

You can get a cheap puddle jumper to places like Houston and Dallas. Using Uber is a cheap alternative to renting a car or using taxis.

If you had an extra day or so, I'd recommend driving up to Chattanooga. It's a nice town around nice scenery. You could even stop in Birmingham on the way there.

Solo traveler here. I actually feel imprisoned sometimes when I travel with a group or meet some friends at a city. I like to be on my own schedule, my own itinerary. I travel to Vegas frequently and hope to move there one day. If I meet friends there, I have "my time" and "group" time during my stay. Of course with a gf, it works differently.

I've traveled alone quite a bit. However there is kind of a disclaimer.
I did two tours in Europe with Globus Tours. I traveled to and from the tours alone, but while there, was with a group of 40 plus.
That being said, I still had to make friends from complete strangers over a period of about 10 days. I'd like to say I've made a few lifelong friends and some really good friends who live all over the world. A couple I met on my trip to Italy ended up inviting me to visit them in Australia. On that trip, we visited some other Aussies I met on my Eastern European tour. The Italy couple are coming to visit me in November.
What was really great about going alone is that I could hang out with different people throughout the tour, without feeling like I was turning my nose up at any other people. I also didn't have some naggy bitch throwing shade at the rich people or the "beautiful" people. Or, I could do whatever the frick I wanted during free time, like wander through a museum, or hang out in a pub, or take a long relaxing 30 minute shite.
Going on a tour group is the only way I could travel alone. If I went to, say, Paris by myself and stayed by myself, I could easily see not speaking to anyone except waiters, hotel staff, etc. for the duration of my trip. I need to be "forced" to mingle and talk to strangers.
