Honolulu & Maui: Things to See/Places to Eat
Posted on 11/8/18 at 8:24 am
Posted on 11/8/18 at 8:24 am
I'm heading to Hawaii Thanksgiving week for my honeymoon. Only spending 2 nights in Honolulu at the Outrigger Waikiki then heading over to the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort for 5 nights.
Planned so far: Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head on Oahu and hitting the Road to Hana and Haleakala on Maui. We are keeping our plans open so that we don't live and die by a set schedule on our honeymoon.
I've read about visiting the North Shore on Oahu, but I won't have a rental car on Oahu, only on Maui.
What are some other places that we should check out on each island, and more specifically, what are some restaurants that we should check out?

House Without a Key in Honolulu. Right on the water. Go at sunset for live music and a beautiful view on the beach. You won't regret that one.

Two places you MUST eat at in Maui:
Mama's Fish House. Yes, the prices are absolutely outrageous. But it is an absolutely wonderful restaurant, gorgeous, great setting, very very good food.
The Mill House -- Another gorgeous as hell setting, and stunningly good food. Not quite as expensive as Mama's.

TL;DR Warning
2 things to do before you go to Maui:
1. Download the "Maui Gypsy Guide" app. It's your own personal tour guide. It tells you when & where to stop and gives you very cool history lessons of the island as you are driving in real time. Well worth the money.
2. Purchase "Maui Revealed" Amazon
If you want to do activities/tours, 2 that I would recommend are:
1. Trilogy tours sail to Lanai. Incredible
2. Haleakala sunrise bike tour.
Food in Ka'anapali/Lahaina:
1. Sunrise Café - Great coffee/breakfast shop with the Friendliest staff.
2. 808 Grindz Café - Order the Macadamian Nut pancakes with Mac-Nut Sauce. Best pancakes I've ever had and it's not even close.
3. The only time to eat at Mama's Fish House is at sunset, so plan accordingly. It's also pricey. I spent 3 bills in there. A pint of non-domestic beer was $18.
Other Activities in that Area:
-Surf Lessons
-Jump off Black Rock at Ka'anapali Beach
-Walk Lahaina and check out Banyan Tree Park
-Catch a Luau.
You said you are renting a car in Maui. Make sure it is a 4WD and make the drive to Hana down the Kahekili Hwy through Kahakuloha. They'll never recommend you do this because the highway gets down to one lane with no barricades for about 7 miles. Frick em. You'll be fine. Take it slow and enjoy the incredible scenery. (takes about 7 hrs to make all of the stops + drive).
The Maui Gypsy guide will tell you when and where to stop along your drive for sites you'll not want to miss. It's in the book as well.
Things to do in Hana:
Waianapanapa State Park AKA Black Sand Beach
Red Sand Beach - Do your research. The locals won't tell you how to get there.
Hike Pipiwai Trail all the way to Waimoku Falls - Ignore the signs. Go all the way up to and under (if it's not too heavy) the falls!
O'heo Gulch AKA 7 sacred Pools.
(The last 2 are part of Haleakala National Park)
Hana Eats
If you can make it there on a weekend/weekend night stop at Hana Farms for fresh fruit, banana breads and pizza night. They cook their pizza in a brick-oven with fresh ingredients grown right there on the farm. and it's BYOB. Great local scene.
Y'all will love Maui far more than Oahu. It's much less commercialized, slower, and the locals are much friendlier.
Embrace the Hawaiian culture. They're proud of it. The more eager you are to learn and soak in the Island, the more respect you'll earn from the locals!
Enjoy your trip!!

If you're going to stay on Waikiki, you should eat at Rainbow Drive-in. It's an icon for local plate lunches. Leonard's Bakery is just down the street from there. For breakfast grab a malasada. I tend to stick with the original plain, but the macadamia one is pretty good, too. I haven't been to Maui yet, but I have made several trips to Oahu. We've never been bored, but we don't hang around Waikiki, either.

This, this and all of this.
Get there like 90 minutes before sunset and just tell them you're just there for pu-pus and drinks and would like to be by the music. Yes, the drinks are expensive but they're very well poured.

This x100. Try to get there a about 30 min before sun set, and get a a table with a view.
If you plan on doing any snorkeling or diving, call these people LINK
It was amazing, and we had a blast. If you have some time check out the Surfing Goat and Ocean Vodka. They have daily tours.
If you do the Road to Hana check out LINK for breakfast before you start up the road.
I forgot about the Maui Cookie Lady cookies. Be sure to get one if you see them. They were at the gift shop in our resort and a few other places had them.

If you don't go to Mama's when you go to Maui then it is a total fail. Trust me, when I saw the prices I bitched about it before.
TOTALLY worth it. Gorgeous spot, amazing food, great cocktails. Total Hawaiian experience.

Agree with everyone else on Maui. Do the Road to Hana your own way and stop where you want to. For your road to Hana, leave as early as possible so you can start your journey right at sunrise. Random waterfalls where you can swim (cold af) are great. The unique beaches are must see as mentioned above. Also, the BBQ at Bruddah Hut's food truck on the back side of Hana is excellent. I recommend taking the road all the way around the South side as well. Some of the drive sucks but the views are spectacular and worth it. Beware of locals driving like maniacs, just stay patient.
Haleakala sunrise was pretty amazing. Temps up top are freezing and you'll be shedding layers on your way down. I enjoyed Mama's fish house but for me, it wasn't the most amazing experience of all time. The location and overall feel are what make it special. With that said, I'd go back.
From your stay at the Hyatt you are only 15 minutes from my favorite breakfast place in the world: The Gazebo. Arrive 30 min before opening and get in line. It's worth it, believe me.

but I won't have a rental car on Oahu,
I would reconsider this if possible. Waikiki is basically just a crowded shopping district with a small crowded beach. Then again, without knowing anything about your wife, she might enjoy that kind of thing.
